West Texas A&M Lady Buffs defend home court with wins over UT Tyler and Angelo State during Lone Star Conference crossover matches

The West Texas A&M volleyball team regained momentum from an up and down showing at the Colorado Premiere Tournament by proving putting the Lone Star Conference on notice with two big victories during the LSC Crossover Tournament at the WTAMU Fieldhouse on Thursday and Saturday.

The Lady Buffs opened the tournament with a sweep of UT Tyler, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22, and then closed the tournament getting an impressive sweep of No. 13-ranked Angelo State, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20.

WTAMU is now 8-3 overall and 6-0 at home to start the year and will officially start league play when the Lady Buffs travel south to battle Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m. Friday, and a Saturday afternoon match with Texas A&M International.

Thursday’s match

 West Texas A&M senior and Hereford graduate Taytum Stow became the third player in program history to reach 500 career blocks on Thursday night during the sweep of UT Tyler.

Stow finished the game with three blocks to achieve the accomplishment and three kills.

Amarillo High graduate and outside hitter Currie Marusak led the Lady Buffs with 16.5 points, posting 14 kills and securing two service aces. Miranda Acosta excelled defensively, collecting 17 digs over the course of the match.

Saturday’s match

The No. 25 Lady Buffs carried the excellent play into Saturday knocking off Angelo State to go 2-0 in the LSC Crossover.

Kaycee Cavanaugh led the Lady Buffs with 13 kills, and played a huge role on the team attack. Marusak excelled with 11 kills with six digs and Stow was clutch on the front row getting six blocks adding seven digs finishing with a hitting percentage of .462. Hannah Pemberton facilitated the offense with 13 assists and contributed on the back row with seven digs.

Madi Parrish led Angelo State with 9 kills on 30 attempts and added 5 digs and 10 total points. Madison Scrivner was pivotal in setting up plays, contributing 23 assists. Raelee Allen delivered 8 kills on 17 attempts, achieving a .294 hitting percentage while also chipping in with a dig. Mary Johnson made a defensive impact with 3 solo blocks, adding to the team’s overall defensive efforts.
