Madelynn Wellman, Vega volleyball, Soph.
On the court: The Vega Lady Longhorns were able to close out the regular season strong with wins over Highland Park and Sanford-Fritch to gain a share of the District 1-2A title with the Lady Eagles. Wellman stepped up in both of those matches. Against the Lady Hornets, Wellman earned a double-double dishing out 14 assists, then landing 12 kills and added eight digs. Against Fritch, Wellman was once again all over the court with 19 assists, nine kills, seven digs and an eye-opening seven aces.
As Vega enters the UIL Class 2A Division I playoffs, the sophomore is having a strong year with 306 kills, 262 digs, 188 assists and 51 aces.
Coach Berklee Norris: “Sanford-Fritch had beat us three straight times, so it was big for are team to beat them and clinch a share of a district title. That gave us a lot of momentum heading into the playoffs. Madelynn played six rotations but halfway through the year we moved her more to a setter and outside hitter. She has stepped up for us in that role, and is now leading us in assists and kills. She has gotten mentally stronger and she is focused on getting to the next play and not letting things bother her like she used to.”
Wellman: “Beating Fritch was huge for us. It meant a lot to myself and this team to win a gold ball and hopefully get more going into the playoffs. We have a lot of experience back and we’re playing really well right now. I like how I’m playing personally, because I feel I’m mentally stronger than I was last season as a freshman. I used to get in my head pretty bad but now I’m just focusing on moving forward and moving to the next play.”
