West Texas A&M did what it was suppose to do and that was take care of business getting a 69-14 Homecoming win against Western New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference contest Saturday night at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium.
The Buffs (3-5 overall, 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference) played a complete game scoring the most points in a contest all season, but that wasn’t the story from a local perspective. In the fourth quarter with the game in hand, West Plains graduate and freshman quarterback Reid Macon’s number was called early in the fourth quarter and Macon picked up right where he left off coming from an outstanding high school career.
Macon, who took four snaps in a Wagon Wheel win at Eastern New Mexico last week, led the Buffs to three touchdown drives going 3-for-3 for 55 yards with two touchdown passes and ran for a 70-yard score.
“It was so much fun to get back out there again,” Macon said. “I’ve been putting in a lot work and preparation and just trying to stay ready. I’ve spent a lot of time in the film room and it was good just going out and playing the game I love.”

Macon was one of the best in the Texas Panhandle and the state the past four years helping build West Plains into a Class 4A Division I power. In four years as the starting quarterback for the Wolves, Macon went 42-12 throwing for 11,856 passing yards ranking him 10th all-time in Texas High School football history. His 120 career touchdown passes rank 13th all-time in the storied history of Texas high School football.
After signing with WTAMU last spring, Macon knew he’d have to wait for his opportunity. With the Buffs depleted at the quarterback position due to injuries, third string quarterback Ryan Gafford, a redshirt freshman made his first career start against the Mustangs on Saturday pushing Macon up the depth chart and Macon didn’t disappoint.
Macon’s first career pass couldn’t have been more fairy tail as he delivered a perfect ball to Juwan Jones for a 20-yard score. His second pass was just as sweet and on point hitting Antoine Sullivan for a 29-yard pitch and catch. To cap things off, Macon then sprinted 70 yards, showing off his speed and quickness for a punctuation TD.
“It was all just a surreal moment,” Macon said. “We did a great job of game-planning and I really didn’t feel nervous at all. I felt prepared and I was just excited to on the field more than anything. It was a special night and it shows I’ve been putting in the work.”
