Landyn Hack, Panhandle football, Sr.

On the field: Hack is one of the area’s most talented and experienced players, and he lived up to the hype in a 56-6 rout of Clarendon to open the season. In his fourth season on the varsity, Hack’s entering his second full season at quarterback after playing running back and receiver his first two years. Hack showed just how comfortable he’s gotten at the position, taking part in five of his team’s first six touchdowns. He ran for 215 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 carries, and completed 6-of-11 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns to Cuyler Mize. Quarterback wasn’t the only position Hack played, as he started at safety and made four tackles. He also provided Panhandle’s entire kicking game, as he kicked four out of five extra point attempts in the second half, and his lone punt of the evening went for 59 yards.

Coach Dane Ashley: “I saw at the regional track meet that he took every relay and put it on his shoulders. In a maturity way I really saw a change in him last spring. Football-wise his game has really developed. He’s been a great runner and we spent a ton of times at different camps and he’s become a more well-rounded quarterback I think. When I talk to the guys who are calling the plays, I just tell them do what we have to do to win the game and don’t be fancy. We were able to run off-tackle and we kept within that game plan right there. (Hack) doesn’t get upset about the fact that he only threw the football 11 times. He just wants to win and I think sometimes that comes from a part of last season where we didn’t win a lot. Winning’s such a good feeling he’ll do whatever it takes.”

Hack: “Coming in the second year at quarterback it’s more relaxed than the first year. I was more nervous but I’m good this year. Being the quarterback is being the leader of the offense and this year I feel I’m better at that. I was real happy coming off with a win to start this year. It took me a minute to get over (an early interception) but after that we still had the rest of the game to play. I’ve always been run-first in my first two years of high school. We have good receivers outside with the run game first, but we always have the passing game to go to. When people see that it really opens up the passing game. In game one you’ve got to take that on to the next week and the rest of the season no matter how far we might go.”
