The Roughriders turned defense into offense once again, using a 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a fourth-quarter interception returned for a score to defeat Claude 40-22.

The victory improved Boys Ranch to 7-0 for the first time in school history, but more importantly it puts the Roughriders in control of District 1-1A Division I at 2-0. That sets up a showdown at unbeaten White Deer (7-0, 2-0) with the district championship in the balance at 7 p.m. this coming Friday at Bucks Stadium.

“It was an ugly start, and we showed we can fight through adversity,” Boys Ranch head coach Louis Kelley III said. “We can come back from anything. We’re a great team. We just learned how to win this past year, and we’re going to keep it rolling.”

The opening minutes were anything but conventional for Boys Ranch. Claude struck first on a 2-yard touchdown run, but the Roughriders answered in a hurry. A kickoff return put Boys Ranch on the board, and Jacobe Gonzales returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown before the Roughriders’ offense had even taken the field.

Boys Ranch did not run its first offensive play until the final minute of the first quarter, yet it had already built a 12-6 lead.

The Roughriders finally made their mark through the air when Isaac Acosta connected with Cord’e Jackson for a 57-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. The successful two-point kick extended Boys Ranch’s lead to 20-6.

Boys Ranch quarterback Isaac Acosta threw for 197 yards with three touchdowns against Claude.

Acosta finished 7-of-11 passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while also recording two interceptions and a defensive touchdown. Jackson contributed three receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown, along with 23 rushing yards. He also recorded two interceptions on defense.

Claude answered with a punishing ground game, refusing to let the Roughriders pull away. Following a Boys Ranch fumble, Mustang standout Trapper Godfrey powered into the end zone from two yards out. Claude then recovered its own onside kick and marched down the field, turning to Godfrey again for a 4-yard touchdown run. The back-to-back scores gave the Mustangs a 22-20 lead heading into halftime.

But Claude’s advantage wouldn’t last. Boys Ranch’s defense took control after the break, shutting out the Mustangs in the second half and delivering the knockout punches that helped the Roughriders pull away.

Boys Ranch’s defense came up huge, recording two fumble recoveries and four interceptions. Gonzales’ 65-yard scoop-and-score and Acosta’s fourth-quarter pick-six highlighted a unit that repeatedly turned takeaways into points.

Kelley said the performance reflected the team’s growth since last season, particularly its ability to stay together when facing adversity.

“You hit us in the mouth, we’re not going to quit,” Kelley said. “We showed that we’re not the same team as last year. We’re a better team. We’re together. We know how to get through things.”

Boys Ranch regained the lead in the third quarter when Acosta connected with Gonzales for a 50-yard touchdown, the only score of the quarter. The Roughriders carried that momentum into the fourth, where the defense delivered the game’s defining blow.

With Claude looking to mount a comeback, Acosta stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 15 yards for a touchdown, swinging the momentum firmly in the Roughriders’ favor.

“I saw the linemen block and then release quickly, like a screen pass,” Acosta said. “I’d seen that play before, so when the quarterback threw it, I wanted to go get it and take it to the house.”

Acosta’s interception return underscored the impact of a defense that has scored in all but one game this season. The Roughriders’ ability to create points on the defensive side has given them another weapon during their historic run.

Kelley credited defensive coordinator Tory Peet for bringing the experience and knowledge needed to build that unit.

“Tory Peet, our defensive coordinator, he’s experienced and he brings the knowledge we need. We scored two touchdowns today on defense. We’re scoring more touchdowns than most offenses,” Kelley said.

Acosta and the offense added one final score when he connected with Mi’kaiel Cooper for a 5-yard touchdown pass, helping seal the 40-22 victory.

Kelley also praised Acosta’s leadership, work ethic, and willingness to compete on both sides of the ball.

“It makes me nervous every time he’s on defense, because I know he’s going to go all out,” Kelley said. “He’s a hard worker. He’s a smart quarterback. He knows what he’s doing.”

Acosta said the victory stood out because of how the Roughriders played together, particularly after Claude challenged them early.

“I feel like we played as a team,” Acosta said. “We came together and we didn’t let them score in the second half.”

He also pointed to the defense’s progress from last season, when the team struggled to pair its understanding of the game with the physicality needed to make stops.

“Last year we knew how to play defense, but we weren’t really physical,” Acosta said. “This year we’re physical, and we’ve come together as a team.”

That growth has carried Boys Ranch to a place the program has never reached before: seven wins without a loss to open the season. The Roughriders are also within reach of what could be the first district championship in school history.

Claude’s Trapper Godrey did rush for 154 yards with two touchdowns.
