Yvonne Legarreta, Friona cross country, Sr.
On the course: Friona’s outstanding runner had another impressive showing during the Canyon Invitational last Saturday.
Running in the 3200-meter division with the likes of powers like Canyon, Dumas and Class 3A rival Canadian, Legarreta ran her best time of the year by clocking an 11:52.23 to come in second only behind Canyon’s Addyson Bristow (10:57.34).
On the season, Legarreta has won three of the four meets she’s participated in. Legarreta, who was the Region I-3A champion a year ago, is looking to punch her ticket back to the UIL Class 3A state meet for an eye-opening fourth straight year. Last season, Legarreta was able to find the medal stand by earning bronze at the state course.
Coach Jamie Rejino: “Yvonne is an outstanding competitor and will do anything to get better. When she has more competition like she did last Saturday that’s when she really thrives. She gets pushed and that’s when you see her kick and can beat someone, she is beside that is close. She is just an amazing young person and she’s been a tremendous runner at this school for four years. She is involved in everything and is just very likeable.”
Legarreta: “Running at the Canyon meet is a hard race. There are so many bigger schools and way more runners than we’re used to. It makes me run better and push myself more and I love that competition. I love chasing someone and pacing with those beside me. I feel my season is going a lot better and I’m excited to try and get back to state for a fourth year in a row. I got third last year so I’d like to climb even higher on the medal stand this year.”
