In a late decision considering it’s mid June, Claude ISD announced during a board meeting Tuesday night that Trevor Johnson will be the new principal at Claude High School.
This is a shock to many that have followed Johnson’s career. The popular coach has spent the past 14 years at Randall High School with 10 of those as a trusted assistant to the late, great, Leslie Broadhurst, and the past two years as the head boys basketball coach of the Raiders.

“This was the most difficult decision I’ve ever made,” Johnson said. “Ultimately, it came down to being able to spend more time with my family. The coaching lifestyle is extremely busy. You never get to see your wife and kids. I have a daughter that will be in eighth grade and a son in fourth grade. So, getting a chance a chance to watch them grow up was the deciding factor. Also, Claude ISD gave me a chance to take the next step in my career. I’ve always wanted to be a campus leader. I didn’t expect it to be this year, but that’s the door God opened for me.”
Under Broadhurst, Johnson learned what it took to be a great basketball coach, and in his two years as the head man, Johnson led Randall to 46 wins and runs to a regional championship game and the regional semifinals. Johnson feels like whoever takes over the Raider basketball program will be in good shape.
“I’ve been pulled in so many different directions the last few months,” Johnson said. “I’ve tried to live up to what coach Broadhurst built this program into. I bleed silver and black. I feel like the program is in a really good place and I’d do anything for this place.”
Johnson’s priority now alongside being closer to his family, is to serve Claude ISD the best he can and do his best in his new leadership position.
“I’m really excited to be in administration,” Johnson said. “Steven Singleton and Travis Willard have been the last two principals here at Randall. They did a really good job of giving multiple opportunities to grow as an admin. They put me in different positions to grow and learn a lot. I’m ready to take that next step. My dad (Jody) has been a superintendent and I’ve always wanted to be a superintendent, and that’s my goal going forward. I think Claude has a lot of momentum and I’m excited how they can grow.”
