On the field: The Sunray gunslinger is off to a tremendous start in 2023 and the numbers back it up. Lujan sliced and diced the Guymon, Okla., defense during a 68-27 win last Friday in every way possible. On the offensive side of the ball, Lujan picked tore up the Tigers going 31-of-44 for 394 yards with eight touchdown passes to five different receivers. Lujan then put up 80 more yards rushing on six carries with another score and picked off two passes on defense with four pass breakups.

On the season, Lujan is the state’s passing leader for any classification with 2,007 yards. He’s thrown 35 touchdowns to only four interceptions while going 138-of-200 for a completion percentage of 69 percent. On the ground, Lujan has tacked on 333 yards on only 26 carries with six more TDs.

Lujan has even passed a special milestone of late, going over the century mark for career passing touchdowns currently sitting at 111.

Coach Wes Boatmun: “We’re playing really well right now, but we could always be playing better. We always want to work on improving but I do like where we’re at. Armando has a new level of comfort he may not have had at this point last year. What’s great about the offense is it’s just not Armando, and he’ll tell you that. He has so many players around him that he can distribute the ball to. That really helps him out the most. It’s hardly ever the same guy getting the ball. But that’s a credit to Armando. He’s doing a great job of going through his progressions and he’s a special talent.”

Lujan: “I love the way we’re playing right now. We’re definitely more disciplined and more physical than we were at this point last year. Personally, I feel I’ve grown in the offense. I’m more comfortable, and I am doing a better job of going through my progressions. I really don’t pay attention to the stats I’m putting up. My goal is to just help this team win games. We focus on one game at a time, and we want our first goal to be a district championship.”
