Joey Read, affectionately known as “Coach Read” by his players, has dedicated nearly three decades to coaching, with the last 19 years spent at Dalhart High School. Before that, he honed his skills during a 10-year tenure at Palo Duro High School. Through the years, Coach Read has built a reputation as a respected leader and mentor, crediting much of his growth to the peers he’s coached alongside.
For him, the most memorable moments aren’t tied to a single game or season but to the invaluable lessons learned from his colleagues and the privilege of coaching his own children.

Personal Insights
When asked about his hidden talents, Coach Read humbly admits he doesn’t have one that would surprise his players. However, his honesty, fairness, and caring nature are qualities his team admires most. A fan of Fleetwood Mac, his office often echoes with their timeless tunes, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
His favorite sports movie is “Friday Night Lights,” a fitting choice for someone so deeply connected to Texas high school football. And while he’s not one for pre-game superstitions, he cherishes the camaraderie of pre-game meals with his fellow coaches.
Program Philosophy
Coach Read’s coaching philosophy is rooted in the idea of leaving it all on the field. He emphasizes the importance of family, both on and off the field, and aims to instill this value in his athletes.
His motto, “Be where you are supposed to be, doing what you’re supposed to be doing, when you’re supposed to be doing it,” serves as a guiding principle for his team.
For him, success isn’t measured by wins alone but by the growth and effort of each athlete. His goal for the upcoming season is simple yet profound: for every athlete to improve and carry that effort into their next sport.
Community Impact
Dalhart’s community holds a special place in Coach Read’s heart. He praises the fans and their unwavering support for the kids, which he considers the best part of coaching in the area. The Texas Panhandle sports scene is made unique by the coaches who contribute to its vibrancy, and Coach Read is proud to be part of this tight-knit community.
Whether it’s leading sled drills or guiding his team through the challenges of a season, Coach Read’s impact extends far beyond the field, leaving a lasting impression on the athletes and families he serves.
