Ascension Academy was able to continue its progress over the years by having another superb showing at the TAPPS District 1-2A Track and Field Meet on Saturday at Lubbock Trinity High School.
The Ascension boys track and field team was the story of the meet placing second with 115 points just 21 behind district champion Nazarene Christian Academy (136).
BJ Britton, Roman Martinez, Owen Chow and Wyatt Cox all scored big points to help that second place happen and advance to regionals in the process. Britton broke a school record with a silver medal in the high jump clearing 6-feet and was also part of a silver medal mile relay team that clocked a 3:38.79.
Martinez was strong in the distance events by setting a new school record in the 800-meter with a time of 2:02.65 to get a silver while then taking another silver medal in the 1600-meter run getting a time of 4:50.06.
Teammate Owen Chow showed off his speed on the track advancing to regionals in three events. Chow blistered the field blazing a time of 50.93 to win gold in the 400-meter sprint, and then earned silver in the 200-meter race running a time of 23.40. Chow found the medal stand one more time as a part of the mile relay team that took silver (3:38.79).
In the field events, Ascension’s Wyatt Cox was clutch. Cox uncorked a 121-8 to win the discus title and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 40-8 1/2.
The Ascension Lady Cardinals finished seventh overall, however, Kathleen Bartley had quite the day. Bartley went double gold by clearing 9-feet in the pole vault for a gold and then found the gold medal podium one more time with a leap of 4-6 to win the high jump. Bartley also punched a ticket to regional in the 200-meter sprinting to a time of 29.43.
San Jacinto Christian Academy’s Siscely Mincher is headed to regionals in three events. The Lady Patriots standout placed second in the 100-meter hurdles clocking a 17.54, and took bronze in both the triple jump (33-2 3/4) and the 300-meter hurdles (53.32).
The TAPPS Class 2A North Regional is set for Thursday, April 30, on the campus of UT Arlington.
