It was recently announced, that offensive coordinator Matt Clemens has been promoted into athletic director and head coach at Sunray following Wes Boatmun stepping down.

Clemens has been at Sunray the past two years and served as the offensive coordinator last season.

“I’m very excited to get going,” Clemens said. “My wife is from Sunray and I love the community. She had been pushing me to go to Sunray and give it a try. They have a great community, great people to work with and they have amazing kids that want to work hard. I’m ready to see what we can build.”

Clemens, a 31-year old Dumas High School graduate, has coached as an assistant at his alma mater before joining the Bobcat staff two years ago. Coming off two years where Sunray won 24 games and had five playoff victories, the Bobcats had to rebuild going 1-9. However, Clemens has hit the ground running in the offseason and is optimistic about the future of the Sunray program.

“We were very young this past year,” Clemens said. “We had graduated a huge talented class, but I’m excited about that youth because they got a lot of snaps last fall. We have a strong junior and sophomores that will be older next year and will now be leaders. The offseason has been going really well. They’ve surprised me and responded positive to being pushed. We’re getting after it and a lot we can achieve.”

Clemens can also guarantee to the community that his dedication to the program and the athletes is genuine.

“Sunray is getting someone who is passionate,” Clemens said. “I’m a relationship first coach and that’s always my goal with athletes. From there, it helps get the most out of them because they know it comes out of a place of love. When I challenge them to do their best they know where it’s coming from.”
