Weston Mitchell, Canadian football, Jr.

On the field: Mitchell was dazzling in Canadian’s season-opening 63-38 victory against Panhandle in a highly anticipated non-district matchup last week. Behind Mitchell, the Wildcat offense totaled over 700 yards with the junior dual-threat quarterback putting up season like stats in just four quarters of work. Through the air, Mitchell torched the Panther secondary going 25-of-35 for 523 yards with six touchdown tosses. With his feet, Mitchell ran behind his superb offensive line for 156 yard on 19 carries for another score, giving Mitchell seven TDs on the night.

Coach Andy Cavalier: “First of all, it always feels great to get a great team win to open the year. I thought we played as a team and it took everyone to play together to beat Panhandle and we did that. As for Weston, he has a level of confidence which comes with experience. This is his third year on varsity and his second year as a starter. He’s bigger, faster and has a great understanding of what we want to do. He makes quick decisions and is always level headed. He never gets rattled or loses his composure.”

Mitchell: “It felt great to get that first win of the year. We had plenty of early season mistakes we need to clean up but it was fun to get a win with the team. I just can’t wait to see what we can do as the season moves on. I think for myself, I couldn’t do anything without the offensive line or the skill guys around me. But, I’m way more comfortable and I’m able to read the defenses much better than I have before and I have a lot more confidence and how I can make a play happen. The coaches I play for a are tremendous and they always have a great game-plan for us.”
