It wasn’t the road trip West Texas A&M head coach Josh Lynn had in mind.

Central Washington jumped all over the Buffs scoring 35 first half points and WTAMU couldn’t recover falling 52-6 during a Lone Star Conference matchup Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg, Wash.

The Buffs fall to 1-3 overall on the year and 1-1 in the LSC. The No. 17-ranked Wildcats are now 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference.

“We walked into a perfect storm,” Lynn said. “I thought Central Washington did a great job of giving our offense different looks and creating confusion. We had some things didn’t go our way and it all went bad early and that’s on us. We have to get over things like this.”

CWU took advantage of WTAMU miscues in the first quarter getting out to a 21-0 lead. The Wildcats were on fire offensively behind quarterback Kennedy McGill who had a seven-yard touchdown run and a 78-yard scoring pass to Mason Juergens in that opening frame.

The Buffs were never able to get back into the game from that point forward.

WTAMU quarterback RJ Martinez completed 19-of-42 passes for 292 yards and one touchdown but did throw two interceptions. Receiver Zach Phipps collected 99 receiving yards on three catches, showcasing his ability to gain significant yardage. Defensive back Cam Manahan led the defense with eight total tackles, providing a solid presence in the secondary.

McGill, who completed 10-of-16 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns, adding 62 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Juergens made a significant impact with 78 receiving yards on one catch, including a touchdown, and added 55 rushing yards on a single attempt.

The Buffs return to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium on Saturday as they host Western Oregon with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
