Canadian’s impressive streak continues
The Canadian Wildcats kept a dominating league win streak in tact after blistering the Childress Bobcats 49-7 which helped Canadian clinch the District 1-3A Division II championship Friday. The win did quite a bit for Canadian. First off, it pushed the Wildcats district winning streak to 23 straight dating back to 2022. It was also Canadian’s 67th district win in the last 69 games dating back to 2012. The victory gives the Wildcats their 12th district championship in the last 13 years and it was the 17th win over Childress in the last 18 meetings.
“One thing I know is that district championships matter,” Canadian head coach Andy Cavalier said. “That’s one of the steps we are always trying to accomplish each and every year. We then use that district title to make the best path for ourselves in the playoffs. Winning district matters to a program and that’s big time for us.”
District 2-4A Division I is a lot of fun
District 2-4A Division I hasn’t disappointed throughout the first three weeks of league play. With two weeks remaining in the regular season there is a ton left to shake out when it comes to playoff positioning.
West Plains (5-3 overall) is in the best shape at 3-0 with wins over Dumas, Canyon and Hereford. Randall (7-1) and Dumas (3-5) are both sitting at 2-1 and Canyon (5-3) along with Hereford (3-5) are at 1-2, though the Eagles do have a head-to-head win over the Whitefaces. The Wolves battle rival Randall at 7 p.m. Friday at Happy State Bank Stadium.
A win for the Wolves and they clinch a share of the district title and will be the No. 1-seed out of the league. A Randall win gives a share of first place and a playoff spot. Dumas still has Hereford left on its schedule and will end the season with Canyon, so it’s going to be a very interesting next couple of weeks.
Spearman’s Hudson Swan earns Class 2A Built Ford Tough Player of the Week
Spearman’s dynamic running back/ wide receiver Hudson Swan was presented with a prestigious state-wide honor during Friday’s pep rally at Spearman High School. The Lynx senior was named the Class 2A Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week for his outstanding performance during a Week 7 district win against Highland Park, 65-26. Swan did it all in the victory against the Hornets finishing the night with 426 all-purpose yards while scoring seven touchdowns. Swan ran the ball nine times for a game-high 230 yards with four TDs, he had a touchdown catch for 39 yards and threw a 27-yard score. Swan was far from done, he also returned a punt 77 yards for paydirt and had an interception on defense.
Tulia clinches share of District 2-2A Division I title
Tulia has turned it on since the district schedule began three weeks ago. The Hornets hammered Hale Center 75-19 on Friday night, moving to 3-0 in the league and 6-3 on the season. The red-hot Hornets made history in the process clinching a share of the district championship and earning the No. 1-seed. That’s the first time the Hornets have won a district title in 34 years since the 1992 season. During these three district wins over Olton, Farwell, and Hale Center, Tulia has outscored all three by a 178-83.
“Clinching a share for the district championship is a testament to our players and the coaching staff,” Tulia head coach Trevor Cordova said. “These guys are working their tails off and the coaches are doing a great job of scouting and preparing each week. These guys are selfless and playing for one another, and this is a brotherhood. It’s amazing to be a part of.”
The Hornets can win the outright district title when they host Floydada on Nov. 6.
