Sophia Hernandez, Amarillo High soccer, Jr.

On the pitch: Though Amarillo High’s season came to an end on Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to Colleyville Heritage in the Region I-5A Division I championship, it doesn’t take away what Hernandez or the Lady Sandies accomplished. AHS ran through District 3-5A to claim the league title and finished with an impressive 20-2-2 mark. Hernandez stepped up this year in a versatile way becoming the team leader in goals and assists. During the district season, Hernandez scored 21 goals with nine assists. In the playoffs, the junior scored two times and dished out two assists.

Hernandez ended her year with 24 goals and 15 assists.

Coach Stacy McPherson: “Sophia has stepped up for us so much this year. She was a substitute last year but now she is so consistent. She distributes the ball well and her goal scoring has really come on. She works well with everyone and though she is hard on herself she is just trying to do anything she can to get better.”

Hernandez: “This season was exciting. I love playing with this team. We’re all such good friends and everyone has a close bond. I feel like I really came on this year. My confidence has gotten better, I’m handling the ball better and that helped my scoring come on. The communication is big for us also. We talk all the time and that helped us so much.”
