The boys division of the 74th Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions had quite the dramatics with the championship coming down to the final race.
Like they had all day, Dumas showed its grittiness and was able to leave it all on the track winning the mile relay and getting 98 points to edge Amarillo High’s 97 to win the team championship Saturday afternoon at Dick Bivins Stadium.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]Showing that grit was the theme of the day for Dumas. To open the running finals Saturday, the sprint relay team of Iva Nava, Adrian Marquez, James Coaly and Imanol Marquez had to dig deep to clock a 41.94, edging Randall’s 42.00.
The 800-meter relay team was in the hunt finishing with a silver, then it was up to the mile relay team to go out and win. That four-some of Nava, Reece Waddell, Colton Mills and Imanol Marquez did just that blazing a season-best time of 3:21.31 to fend off Canyon’s 3:21.67.
Imanol Marquez was outstanding the entire afternoon and arguably the MVP of the Amarillo Relays. On top of leading Dumas to two gold medals and a silver in the relays, Marquez showed his speed by winning the 100-meter dash clocking a time of 10.78. Teammate Reece Waddell had a great showing in the 300-meter hurdles by gaining gold with a 39.27.
In the field events, Stratford’s Bryce Braden was on-hand to participate in the shot put and discus event. Braden is on his way to play football at the Division I college level for the Air Force Academy in the fall. Braden was stellar in the ring Friday tossing a 176-10 to win the discus title. Braden also had a 176-9 during his throws Braden then was able to claim a silver in the shot-put event with a 52-2.
Friday and Saturday champions
Tascosa’s Josiah Fields had a big afternoon starting by being a part of the 800-meter relay team that included Ji’Kavien Moore, Peyton Louanglath and Brett Whatley. That four-some edged Dumas to win a gold medal thanks to a time of 1:28.46. Fields then went on to win the 200-meter race with a 21.94.
Amarillo High had a pair of field event champions Friday. Creed Cavalier had a leap of 21-4 to get a victory in the long jump event. Teammate Hunter Spier then threw a season-best 54-9 to win the shot-put event.
Canyon’s Emmitt Stewart showed his speed by taking down the field to win the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.34.
Palo Duro’s Abdirisak Saidgurah ran an impressive time of 1:59.87 that gave him the gold medal in the 800-meter run.
Caprock’s Alhosan Sheriff popped off an eye-popping 46-1 to claim him the triple jump gold medal.
Caprock teammate Triston West set a new Amarillo Relays meet record with a time of 1:37.39 in the wheelchair 100-meter dash. He also had a throw of 17-6 in the shot put and a time of 1:10.98 in the 400-meter event.
Izak Dominguez of Hereford won the gold medal in the 110-hurdles sprinting to a time of 14.55.
Caiden Crook of Panhandle cleared 6-4 to win the high jump championship.
Clovis, N.M., standout Samuel Fuentes went double gold in the 3200-meter and 1600-meter races. Fuentes paced the field with a 9:53.31 in the 3200 and ran a gold medal time of 4:29.15 in the 1600-meter.
Lubbock-Cooper’s Lane Miller won the pole vault event by clearing 14-feet.
The Bonham Mustangs won the eighth-grade team championship by stacking up 147 points. Coy Cavalier won the long jump (20-10) and the triple jump (40-2) and was a part of the 800-meter relay team that took gold with a 1:37.39. Teammate Rhett Wilfong won the 2400-meter race (8:18.71) and the 1600-meter (5:15.12).
