Jacob Erickson, Perryton cross country, Jr.

On the course: The Perryton Rangers cross country team won their first UIL Region I-4A team championship in 22 years with junior Jacob Erickson pulling the weight by winning the individual regional championship. The District 4-4A champion put on quite the performance last week at a muddy Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock by pacing the field with an impressive time of 15:01.5. Erickson will make his second straight appearance at the UIL state cross country meet after finishing fourth at Round Rock last season as a sophomore.

Coach Staci Erickson: “It was very muddy and raining the entire time, but the guys were pumped to run and go leave their mark. They all had great attitudes and they knew they had to go out and earn the championship. It was emotional as a coach and a mother watching Jacob. Usually I don’t get to watch most of his race, but I found a good spot on the course where I could see him run and I was able to watch his final 400-meters. He ran a great race and he makes it looks easy when he runs. He’s focused and the moment never seems to be too big for him. I’m very proud of him and the team. Now we’re looking forward to see what we can do at state.”

Erickson: “The goal at regional was to be the best. We were able to do that but we know we still have a state meet to go run at. We’re all excited about that and we can’t wait to get down there and do our best. It was raining and pretty muddy in Lubbock last week, but I wasn’t worried about it. I just avoided the mud and did what I needed to do. I think I’ve been able to be more strategic this year and I’m just wanting to get better each and every time I go out on the course.”
