High School Volleyball Texas Panhandle and South Plains regional semifinal playoff pairings

Boys Athlete of the Week – Jacob Erickson, Perryton

Who’s out: Lubbock Monterey, Lubbock High, Frenship Memorial, Caprock

Amarillo High (8-1, 6-0): Sandies have already clinched the district’s No. 1 seed and a home playoff game next week. With a win over Caprock on Friday, they’ll clinch the outright district title.

Abilene High (6-3, 5-1): Eagles will clinch the district’s No. 2 seed and a first round home game with a win over Frenship. Could sink to No. 4 seed if they lose by 14 or more and Tascosa wins.

Tascosa (5-4, 4-2): The Rebels are the only district playoff team who can’t possibly host a first round game. They’ll get the No. 3 seed if they beat Frenship Memorial and Abilene High beats Frenship. If they lose and Frenship wins, the Rebels will be the fourth seed.

Frenship (5-4, 4-2): Tigers need to either beat Abilene by four or more if Tascosa wins, or by any margin if Tascosa loses to get that No. 2 seed and a first round home game. A loss guarantees a No. 4 seed.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIVISION II

Who’s in: Palo Duro, Abilene Cooper, Abilene Wylie

Who’s alive: Wichita Falls Legacy, Wichita Falls Memorial

Who’s out: Lubbock-Cooper, Lubbock Coronado

Palo Duro (8-1, 5-0): Dons have clinched the district’s No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Abilene Cooper and Wylie head-to-head. They’ll host a first round game at Dick Bivins Stadium next week, and if they beat Lubbock-Cooper at Bivins on Thursday night, they’ll notch their second straight unbeaten district championship.

Abilene Cooper (6-3, 4-1): Cooper faces Wylie on Friday in a clash between Key City schools for seeding. Since both schools lost to Palo Duro, the winner will get the No. 2 seed and a first round home game next week.

Wylie (6-3, 4-1): See Abilene Cooper. Oh, the loser is guaranteed the No. 3 seed.

Legacy (5-4, 2-3): While Abilene schools will battle it out for the next two seeds behind Palo Duro, Wichita Falls schools will do the same for the fourth and final playoff spot. Loser gets ready for basketball.

Memorial (4-5, 2-3): See Wichita Falls Legacy.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIVISION I

Who’s in: Randall, Dumas, West Plains, Canyon

Who’s out: Hereford, Pampa

Randall (8-1, 3-1): Randall gets the No. 1 seed by beating Hereford and if Canyon beats Dumas, and if there’s a tie with West Plains the Raiders get the nod by winning last week. If there’s a four-way tie for the district crown (Randall loses, Canyon beats Dumas and West Plains loses to Pampa), Randall wins the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed. If the Raiders lose and West Plains and Canyon win, they could sink to a No. 4 seed.

Dumas (4-5, 3-1): Demons win the district and the No. 1 seed with a win over Canyon and if West Plains and Randall win, since they win points tiebreakers with Randall and West Plains. If Randall loses and West Plains wins, though, Demons would settle for a No. 2 seed. Should Dumas lose to Canyon and Randall and West Plains win, that drops the Demons to a No. 4 seed.

West Plains (5-4, 3-1): A win over Pampa on Thursday is the only way West Plains could possibly get the No. 1 seed, and then the Wolves would need Randall to lose the next night. If Randall and Dumas both win, West Plains would have to settle for the No. 3 seed. The Wolves are guaranteed of no worse than a third seed.

Canyon (6-3, 2-2): The Eagles are the only playoff-bound team in the district which can’t get the No. 1 seed under any circumstance. They’re guaranteed no worse than a No. 3 seed by beating Dumas. If Canyon beats Dumas by six or more and Randall loses, the Eagles will get the No. 2 seed if West Plains wins.

DISTRICT 3-4A DIVISION II

Who’s in: Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, Levelland, Lubbock Estacado, Perryton

Who’s out: Borger

Liberty (9-0, 3-0): The Patriots are guaranteed the No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Levelland and Estacado. They’ll get the outright district title by beating Perryton on Friday.

Levelland (6-3, 2-1): Math is quite simple for the Lobos. If they beat Estacado on Thursday, they’ll get the No. 2 seed. A loss, and Levelland is the No. 3 seed.

Estacado (8-1, 2-1): See Levelland.

Perryton (5-4, 1-2): Rangers are locked into the No. 4 seed no matter what, since they lost to both Levelland and Estacado, and will play Brock in the first round of the playoffs.

Sunray (0-9, 0-3): Despite not having the a win, the Bobcats are still alive. If Sunray beats Highland Park by three points or more, the Bobcats are in the postseason getting the fourth and final playoff spot. If Sunray wins by nine or more points, the Bobcats jump to third spot.
