From the cross-country season in the fall to now in the spring, Canyon’s Addyson Bristow has distanced herself more and more as not only one of the top runners in the state, but one of the best in the entire nation.

Bristow made an emphatic statement in front of her biggest crowd to date showing just how explosive she can be by setting two new meet records while helping her Lady Eagles to the team championship during the 74th Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions on Friday and Saturday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Canyon scored 98 points to edge Amarillo High which had 94 points with Bristow stealing the show beginning Friday. The junior started her historic weekend running a 2:07.79 to set the new meet record beating former Canyon star Arin Rice’s record time (2:13.56) by six seconds.

That was just the beginning for Bristow. On Saturday afternoon, Bristow started the running finals in the 800-meter run and got off to a great start leaving the rest of the field immediately. Bristow sprinted down the home stretch to finish with an incredible time of 2:06.64 breaking her own record from Friday and giving her the second-best time in the nation.

Bristow wasn’t done. Later in the afternoon came the 1600-meter race. Bristow shattered that record as well almost sprinting in her mile to a new record time of 4:59.47 beating Hereford’s Betzy Jimenez record of 5:02.56.

Bristow also brought home a silver on the mile with teammates Brooklyn Kinsey, Reese Wilson and Sydnee Winfrey. The four-some ran a strong time of 3:58.22.

Bristow wasn’t the only one setting records. The Amarillo High Lady Sandies had a great day in the relay races highlighted by the mile relay. The four-some of Sofia Quiles, Willow Cornell, Memori Hibbler and Sierra Cornell, blazed to a time of 3:53.57 to shatter the previous meet record held by Tascosa (3:56.39) in 2013.

On top of that performance, the Lady Sandies ran to gold in the 400-meter relay. The team of Sienna Cavalier, Quiles, Novia Castleberry and Hibbler ran a 49.00 to edge Panhandle for a second gold medal on the day. Willow Cornell also went on to win the 100-meter hurdles with a strong race clocking a time of 15.20.

Friday and Saturday champions

Like last year, Tascosa senior Saphina Stanley made a case for the MVP of the meet. Stanley won three gold medals over the weekend starting by defending her long jump championship with a 18-0 1/4. Stanley then blazed a time of 12.24 to win the 100-meter dash and defended her 400-meter race title with a 56.27.

Canyon had two individual winners that helped the Lady Eagles to a team championship. Avery Brown paced the field with a time of 11:35.40 to win the 3200-meter gold medal while Hadley Johnson cleared 11-6 for the championship in the pole vault event.

Randall’s Tenera Gray earned three gold medals and set two school records at the Amarillo Relays. Gray took home her first gold Saturday morning as well as her first school record by hitting 37-10 to win the triple jump. Later in the day, Gray set her second school record by winning the 300-meter hurdles thanks to a time of 43.70. Gray wasn’t done. She also helped her 800-meter relay team of Taislee Shedd, Crystal Johnson and Azariah Gilliam to the gold medal with a time of 1:45.67.

Gray’s teammate Tahlie Brandt was also setting records. Brandt broke her own Amarillo Relays record from last year (15-6) by throwing a 17-1 in the wheelchair shot put event.

Tascosa’s Maggie Marhefka won the gold in the discus event by tossing out a 135-5.

Vega’s Jaz Martinez continued her unbelievable athletic season by coming to the Amarillo Relays and winning the high jump after clearing 5-4.

Nelly Thiessen of Panhandle took home the gold thanks to a toss of 41-9 in the shot put.

Lubbock-Cooper’s Natalie Miller ran a strong time of 26.00 to win the 200-meter gold medal.

The Bonham Lady Mustangs won the eighth-grade team championship with 88 points at the Amarillo Relays. Bonham’s sprint relay and 800-meter relay won gold with times of 52.00 and 1:51.09. Jayci Saryoung of Sam Houston Middle School made a case for meet MVP winning the 100-meter dash (12.86), the 200-meter dash (27.18) and the 400-meter race (1:01.44).
