Bushland blasts Kermit
Bushland wasted no time jumping all over Kermit with a 42-point first quarter finishing the contest with a 70-6 route of the Yellow Jackets in a Class 3A Division I bi-district game at Levelland on Thursday night.
The Falcons (10-1) are now to the area round to take on Paradise (9-2) at 7 p.m. Friday night on Charlie Johnston Field at Fair Park Stadium in Childress.
The Bushland offense exploded from the get-go taking a 42-0 lead after the first quarter against outmatched Kermit (2-9). Quarterback Quaid Ferris didn’t throw it much but when he did, he was effective going a perfect 4-of-4 for 107 yards with three touchdowns. Ferris also added a rushing score.
Slade Perry paced the ground game with 92 yards on four carries with a touchdown and Ty Purcell, Max Rodriguez, Tagg Thrash and Ty Tarango all had receiving scores.
River Road wins second thriller over Lamesa in a month
For the second time in a month, the River Road Wildcats were able to sneak a dramatic victory out against Lamesa, only this time it was on a much bigger stage.
The Wildcats were able to come away with a 23-20 thriller thanks to a 39-yard field goal from Diego Martinez with three seconds to play to lift River Road to a Class 3A Division I bi-district win Thursday night at Peoples Bank Stadium at Frenship High School.
In the first meeting back on Oct. 11, River Road held off the Golden Tornadoes 35-34 in overtime.
It’s the Wildcats (5-6) first playoff win since 2020 and snaps River Road’s three-game losing skid.
Lamesa (4-7) was in total control leading 14-0 at half Thursday. However, the Wildcats started chipping away in the third quarter started by a one-yard touchdown by quarterback Alex Warren.
At the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats were able to tie the game up, 14-14, thanks to another Warren one-yard score. River Road then took its first lead on Warren’s third scamper of the contest of eight-yards putting the Wildcats on top 20-14 midway through the fourth.
Lamesa took back control in the late moments of the fourth scoring with 2:36 to play taking a 21-14 advantage, but River Road took the final minutes driving down into Tornadoes territory giving Martinez a chance at the game-winning kick and he delivered.
Warren was spectacular in the win chewing up Lamesa for 177 yards on 29 carries scoring all three Wildcat touchdowns.
The Wildcats advance to the area round to battle Vernon (8-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Plains-Capital Park at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
Class 3A Division II
Canadian rolls by Muleshoe
In a rare rematch from a previous Week 3 meeting, Canadian battled Muleshoe to open the Class 3A Division II bi-district round on Thursday night at Happy State Bank Stadium.
While this was a rematch, this matchup was the total opposite of the first one that saw the two teams combine for 140 points and over 1,300 yards, however, the result was the same.
Canadian took control early in the first quarter on its way to 53 unanswered point for a lopsided 53-6 victory.
Getting this win is also continuing Canadian on an impressive path running a bi-district win streak to 23 straight.
The Wildcats (8-3) are now set to face Coahoma (7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday night at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldogs Stadium in Plainview.
Muleshoe, which was decimated by injuries playing without senior starting quarterback Nathan Martens and sophomore running back Josue Sigala, end the year at 6-5.
Canadian’s Julian Dominguez highlighted the first half in a multitude of ways. Following Muleshoe’s only touchdown, putting the Mules up 6-0, Dominguez took the ensuing kickoff, sprinted down the sideline, reversed his field and took off 87-yards for a touchdown giving the Wildcats a lead they’d never relinquish up 7-6.
In the second quarter, Canadian started to pull away. On a 3rd and 22, quarterback Clay Kendall hooked up with Dominguez on a 34-yard pitch and catch as the Wildcats went up 21-6. Dominguez called his own number again on the next drive from 3-yards out, then punched in a 21-yard run to paydirt before half that lifted the Wildcats to a commanding 33-6 halftime lead.
Dominguez ended his night with 45 yards receiving, 61 yards rushing on eight carries, on top of the 87-yard kickoff return for a total of five touchdowns. Dominguez also had an interception on defense to go with six tackles.
Kendall ended his outing 12-of-22 for 188 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. Chris Flores led the ground attack with 108 yards rushing on 12 carries and Riggs Pennington snagged five catches for 95 yards with a TD.
Defensively, Canadian limited the Mules to 108 total yards of offense. Linebacker Wyatt Davis had a game-high 16 tackles five of those for a loss.
Childress slips by Slaton
Behind a very physical run attack, Childress was able to outlast Slaton for a 27-24 victory during a Class 3A Division II bi-district battle at Tyer Stadium in Floydada on Friday night.
In a contest between two teams that build a reputation on running the football, it was the Bobcats grinding out 268 of their 366 yards on the ground.
Childress built a 14-0 first quarter lead behind a pair of Lucian Davis touchdowns. The first came on a 40-yard pass to Davis from quarterback Drake Rabe. The second TD was a three-yard scamper by Davis.
Davis then helped put the game out of reach in th third quarter. Leading 21-18, Davis broke loose for a 24-yard score that put Childress up 27-18.
Davis ended the night with 14 carries for 84 yards with two touchdowns including his 40-yard scoring reception. Senior running back Kobe Sims tacked on 49 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Rabe was efficient going 8-of-14 passing for 98 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 70 yards.
Childress (6-5) is now set for an area round clash with Wall (10-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday in Slaton.
Bi-district quick hits
- Dalhart dismantled Denver City in a Division I bi-district game rolling to a 56-0 shutout on Friday night in Lubbock. Quarterback Hunter Trusler was a perfect 10-for-10 passing for 203 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. He also ran for 53 yards with another score. The Golden Wolves (8-3) advance to the area round to play Jim Ned (8-3) set for 7 p.m. Friday at First United Park at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
- Idalou put an end to Tulia’s season with a 55-6 bi-district win at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Thursday. The Hornets season comes to an end at 3-8.
- Littlefield put up the points beating Friona 72-36 on Friday night in the Division II bi-district round. The Chieftains season comes to an end at (2-9).
