Booker rolls Springlake-Earth

Year two of Six-Man football is turning up a bed of roses for Booker as the Kiowas rolled over Springlake-Earth, 62-30, during a Class 1A Division I bi-district matchup at Tigers Stadium in Groom on Friday night. 

Booker (10-1) now has now put together its first 10-win season since 2014 and will meet up with Whiteface (11-0) in the regional semifinal round at a time and place to be determined next week.

This game started fast, tied up 16-16 after Nehemiah Castillo raced 72-yards for a score for the Wolverines. Booker then took the kickoff and marched down field as Chase Nelson found a wide-open Adrian Rosales from 33-yards out to put Booker back up 22-16.  

Booker’s defense then answered the call getting a fourth down stop on the ensuing possession at their own 19.   

The Wolverines fought back to begin the second half as Froylan Agundiz hit Tyler Tanaro and the big man did the rest going 55-yards for the score. 

Unfazed, the Kiowas answered back with a Nelson nine-yard run to paydirt, his second of the night. The Booker defense then stepped up again getting a turnover on downs at the Wolverines 33 and Nelson made them pay again. The senior gunslinger found Marco Avila from nine yards out and a 46-22 lead and the eventual win.

Nelson was outstanding all night long throwing for three scores and running two in while Rosales found paydirt twice running to go along with a touchdown reception.  

Springlake-Earth finished the season with a 5-5 mark.

Happy trounces Wildorado in bi-district meeting 

Gold balls are becoming the norm in Happy as the Cowboys took down Wildorado on Friday night 60-14 in Class 1A Division I bi-district action at the Cowboy Corral. 

The win marks the fifth straight year Happy has won a bi-district title and will now move on to the regional semifinals to face rival Borden County (7-4) at 6 p.m. Friday in Lockney. 

The Cowboys (10-1) offense scored twice in the first quarter on identical 21-yard runs from Braylan King to go up 14-0 but the Mustangs Blu Washington took the ensuing kickoff back 59-yards for a score to give Wildorado life. 

Happy then notched another score from King, this time from four yards out, for a 22-7 lead heading to the second quarter.

In that second quarter, the Cowboys raced away from the visitors as Hayes Bressler tossed scoring strikes to Kole Gibson, CW Johnson and the final touchdown to Mason Hix to seal the victory right before halftime.

King led the way for the Cowboys carrying the ball 14 times for 192 yards and three scores while Bressler was efficient through the air connecting on five of his seven passes for 75 yards and those three scores.

The Cowboys defense held Braddek Darnell, who had thrown for over 3,300 yards on the season to only 62 yards passing on a 7-for-16 night.

Wildorado finished a successful season at 6-4.

Valley hangs tough in loss to Knox City

In a back-and-forth affair in Chillicothe, Knox City took down upset-mindedd Valley in a Region II, Class 1A Division II bi-district contest Friday night. 

The win pushes the Greyhounds into the regional semifinals of the playoffs where they will meet Water Valley (9-2) next week at a time and place to be determined.

This game was tight all night long with Knox City (8-3) holding a slim six-point lead, 44-38, headed to the fourth. 

In that fourth quarter, the Greyhounds scored first as Cameron Hernandez hit Blake Abilla from five yards out to go up 52-38. Valley answered that score right as Carson Tucker found Tailor Green from five yards away with 5:27 remaining to cut the lead back to six.  

Hernandez then helped the Greyhounds answer back on a two-yard run with just over three minutes to go in the game and a 58-46 lead. On the next possession, disaster struck for the Patriots with a fumble allowing Hernandez and the Greyhounds to capitalized, this time scoring from eight yards out with another touchdown and a 64-46 lead with less than two minutes to go.

Taevion Ramos had an outstanding night for the Patriots toting the rock 24 times for 131 yards and two scores while Damian Valdez found paydirt three times on 71 yards rushing.  Tucker was almost perfect through the air going 12-of-13 for 125 yards and two touchdowns.  

After starting the season winless in their first five games, the Patriots righted the ship and captured second in district and finished with a 4-7 mark on the season.

Division II 

Follett races past Paducah

An opportunistic Follett defense led a second quarter charge to help the Panthers take down Paducah 64-22 on Thursday night in Groom in a Class 1A Division II bi-district meeting.  Division II bi-district game. 

The win moves the Panthers (7-3) into the regional semifinal round of the playoffs where they will play Sands (8-3) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Benjamin. 

It’s been 20 days since the Panthers locked up a district title and played last and the first quarter of action showed that as the Dragons put up two scores to lead 14-8 at the end of one. 

However, on the very first play of the second quarter, Wyatt Terrell and Rodlee Williamson forced Ethan Garibaldi for the Dragons to cough up the ball which David Meeks recovered at the Follett 33. 

Meeks then made Paducah pay as went around right end following Terrell and raced 47-yards to paydirt and the first lead of the night for the Panthers at 16-14.

Paducah (6-4) was able to drive the length of the field but an interception at the Follett 14 by Bryan Torres, his first of two on the night, gave the ball back to the District 1-1A champs.

Torres finished off the drive with a sprint from nine yards out and a lead at 32-14 that the Panthers would not relinquish. Meeks put together an outstanding game finding the endzone six times on the ground and was on the receiving end of his seventh score.  Torres also had a great night with two rushing touchdowns and two interceptions.

Miami falls short to Motley County

After falling behind early, Motley County rode a strong second quarter to a victory over Miami 44-33 in a competitive Class 1A Division I bi-district clash.

The Matadors stay unbeaten at 11-0 while advancing into the regional semifinal round to take on Klondike (7-4) at a next week at a time and place to be determined.

Miami’s season comes to an end at 6-4.

The Warriors held an early 14-8 lead when the Matadors scored on the ground and took a 16-14 lead. That was the last time Miami held the lead as Motley County used a strong second quarter to head to half up 30-14.  

In the second half, Miami was down 44-25 when Gunner Lackey hit Tyler Anderson on a tipped pass for a score to cut the lead to 44-33 with 3:11 left to play. 

After stopping Motley County on the next possession, the Warriors had one last shot with 1:02 remaining but was unable to find paydirt.
