Harper Vaughan, Amarillo High volleyball, Soph.
On the court: The reigning Press Pass Sports Offensive Player of the Year has gone from a fabulous freshman to a sensational sophomore for an Amarillo High team that is off to a 19-8 start to the season and a perfect 5-0 in District 3-5A. The 6-foot-1 Vaughan is not just powerful at the net with her leaping ability and swing but is dangerous with her ability to pass and dig the ball. In win over Lubbock Monterey last week, Vaughan put together a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. Then this past Saturday in a sweep of Lubbock-Cooper, Vaughan dominated by landing 23 kills with nine digs. On the season, Vaughan has already totaled 307 kills, 158 digs and has 32 aces with 30 blocks.
Coach Haleigh Burns: “Harper has come a long way from last year both physically and mentally. She dealt with a knee injury this spring and although it was a difficult experience I believed it helped her grow. She came back stronger, more confident and with a new level of maturity. She also understands the game more. She has learned to trust herself and her abilities. Harper just means so much to this team. She is our go-to outside hitter and someone we count I’m incredibly proud of her and her growth and the work she has put in to be where she’s at.”
Vaughan: “I love this team and how quickly we’ve all become best friends. We all get along and that shows when we play together. I had an injury in the spring and I had to work to improve to get back for this year. It’s taught me how to be tough and push through the hard things. I have improved on my leadership as well this season.”
