Bushland blasts Shallowater

Bushland put its foot on the gas in the second half and played relentless defense leading to a huge 35-3 dominating road victory against rival Shallowater in a key District 2-3A Division I clash on Friday night at Todd Field in Shallowater.

The Falcons (8-1 overall) avenge a loss to the Mustangs a year ago while staying in first place of the district at 3-0. Shallowater’s struggles this year continue dropping to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in district.

The Falcons used a couple of first half scores on a Tanner Adams 37-yard touchdown catch and a Jaxon Fetsch 16-yard TD run.

The second half, Bushland’s defense stayed relentless helping the offense with a Tagg Thrash 22-yard fumble return for a score and an Aden Hall pick six.

Dawson Jaco had a modest night for the Falcons through the air going 16-of-27 for 165 yards. Tanner Adams had seven catches for 115 yards and caught a TD from Ty Purcell. But it was the defense that stepped up holding Shallowater to 167 yards of offense while forcing five turnovers.

Colton Reynolds led the way with 10 tackles, three for a loss, and caused a fumble.

Muleshoe hammers River Road

Muleshoe looked refreshed off a bye week thanks to a handling of River Road by a 48-6 count at Wildcats Stadium on Friday night.

It’s the fifth time the Mules have scored 48 points in a game this year.

After a slow start leading only 7-0 at the end of the first, Muleshoe turned it on in the second quarter with a 28-point explosion to take a 35-0 lead into halftime. Quarterback Nathan Martens finished 7-of-10 for 115 yards with a TD. Freshman running back Josue Sigala led the ground game with 156 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns.

Muleshoe is 7-1 overall and 2-1 in District 2-3A Division I. River Road is 1-8, 0-3.

District 3-3A Division II

Childress edges Spearman in final seconds 

Childress scored with just under a minute to play that lifted the Bobcats to a thrilling 28-21 win over rival Spearman for a key District 3-3A Division II victory at Lynx Stadium on Friday night.

With the game tied, 21-21, Scout Smith found his way in from a yard out that gave the Bobcats the huge win.

Thanks to that victory, Childress (5-3 overall) is now tied with Friona at 2-1 for second place in District 3-3A Division II. Spearman falls to 3-5, 1-2.

Da’Reon Mathis had a superb night for the Bobcats rushing for a team-high 104 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Drake Rabe was 12-of-16 for 121 yards with a TD and an interception and on top of Smith’s game-winning touchdown he also made nine tackles.

Spearman’s JP Carbajal piled up 102 yards on 20 carries and freshman Hudson Swan took back a 30-yard interception return for a score that tied the game, 21-21, in the third quarter.

Dimmitt tames Tulia 

Dimmitt earned its first district win two years with a 43-27 win against Tulia at Younger Field on Friday.

Dimmit improves to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in District 3-3A Division II. Tulia’s struggles continue at 1-7, 0-3.

Running back Tony Salazar stung the Hornets defense for 174 yards on 25 carries with a score. Quarterback Jack Lunsford threw for 91 yards with a pair of touchdowns and scampered for 113 yards with two more touchdowns.

Canadian steam rolls Friona 

The No. 2-ranked Canadian Wildcats took over sole possession of District 3-3A Division II by steam rolling Friona 56-7 at Chieftains Stadium on Friday.

This game was never close with Canadian scoring 15 points in the first minute and a half while taking a commanding 49-0 lead into the break.

On the opening kickoff, Luke Flowers returned it 95-yards for a touchdown giving Canadian a 7-0 lead. A little later Canadian linebacker Wyatt Davis blocked a punt on Friona’s opening possession allowing Max Dumbald to scoop it and run it in from 25-yards out. Thanks to a two-point conversion, the Wildcats led 15-0 with barely a minute gone by.

Quarterback Camren Cavalier did Camren Cavalier things. The senior smoked Friona in two quarters of work going 16-of-20 for 266 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for 133 yards on only four carries with three scores.

On top of his kickoff return, Flowers snagged four catches for 109 yards and Davis added two catches for 30 yards with a TD.
