Tascosa rolls over Caprock 63-24
The Tascosa Rebels are now back in the playoff hunt.
Doing what they’re best known for, the Rebels literally hit the ground running, racking up 450 yards rushing en route to blowing out Caprock 63-24 at Dick Bivins Stadium. Tascosa is now 3-4 on the season and even in district at 2-2, owning fourth place in the district with two games to go in the regular season.
The Rebels never trailed, as they scored 21 points in each of the first three quarters to cruise to victory. Tascosa gouged Caprock (1-8, 0-5) on the ground all night, averaging nine yards a carry.
Zaq Edwards showed the big-gain nature of Tascosa’s ground attack, leading the Rebels with 94 yards on only two carries. Quarterback Coltyn Fulton ran for 112 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and also threw a touchdown.
Andrew Merrell ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and Tendrick Sergeant ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
The status quo remained in place for the rest of the district. Abilene High, the district leader who had already clinched a playoff spot, stayed unbeaten in district by routing Lubbock Coronado 63-10, and Lubbock-Cooper is now tied for second with Amarillo High after beating Lubbock Monterey 48-27.
District 2-5A Division II
Palo Duro can’t keep up with Rider
Palo Duro fell behind early and never caught up, as the Dons gave up 21 quick points early to Wichita Falls Rider and lost 49-20 on the road.
Rider struck on the first play from scrimmage as Kenji Johnson ran 75 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Over four minutes later, Johnson scored again on a 10-yard run to make it 14-0 and finished the game with 195 yards on 14 carries.
Palo Duro sophomore quarterback Darien Lewis threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns, but the Dons (3-4, 1-2) struggled running the ball, picking up only 51 yards on the ground.
Rider (6-2, 3-0) ran for 268 yards and Joe Castles threw three touchdown passes.
Palo Duro is now tied with Plainview for fourth place in the district. The two Abilene schools, Cooper and Wylie, both won to stay tied for second, as Cooper beat Plainview 31-14 and Wylie routed Lubbock High 52-7.
District 3-4A Division I
Dumas crushes Pampa
In a matchup of teams desperately needing victories, Dumas left no doubt from the start, opening the game with 21 unanswered points to roll to a 56-7 victory at Pampa, giving the Demons their first district win of the season.
Colton Mills threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter for Dumas (3-5, 1-1) of 49 yards to James Coaly and 32 yards to Johnny Marquez. Mills completed 15-of-21 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns.
Luis Escarcega ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and Eduardo Hernandez ran for 66 yards and three touchdowns. Marquez caught two touchdown passes as the Demons rolled up 503 yards of total offense.
Pampa (2-7, 0-3), on the other hand, struggled mightily on offense, gaining only 122 yards against Dumas.
District 2-4A Division II
Borger rallies past Levelland
In a must-win game for both teams, Borger overcame a big deficit at home and scored its first district victory of the season, using a big fourth quarter to get past Levelland 36-28.
Levelland scored the first 21 points of the game to place Borger (4-4, 1-1) in a potentially dire situation. But the Bulldogs showed character, coming back and eventually taking the lead in the fourth quarter to pull out a crucial victory.
Quarterback K.J. Jennings carried Borger offensively, running for 202 yards and four touchdowns while completing 11-of-17 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs are now in a three-way tie for second while Levelland (2-7, 0-3) is alone at the bottom of the district.
