Thursday’s games

Class 2A

Seagraves (0-1) at Bovina (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs showed a lot of fight despite a loss to Vega last week. Expect Bovina to ground the Eagles and get Ramiro Carmona his first victory as a head football coach. … Bovina 33, Seagraves 14

Class 1A

Hedley (0-1) at Groom JV (0-0), 6 p.m.
Take the varsity team in this one. The Owls will find Groom’s JV a much better matchup than Miami last week. … Hedley 58, Groom JV 18

Miami (1-0) at Lefors (0-1), 7 p.m.
After chasing Aden Woodard all game last week, the Pirates have to deal with Haiden
Thompson. Miami wants to be considered the best team in the Amarillo-area and the stats in this one will help their case. …Miami 66, Lefors 13

Azle Christian (1-0) vs. Wildorado (1-0) at Chillicothe, 7 p.m.
Aden Woodard ran wild for the Mustangs last week, but the Crusaders are one of the
better private school teams in the state. Wildorado plays tough in this one but Azle
Christian’s talent is too much to overcome. …Azle Christian 56, Wildorado 48

Booker (1-0) at Claude (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
After their first Six-Man win since 1959, the Kiowas are all smiles heading into this win
while Claude used the running of Jayden Blandford and Braygon Conrad to bury Roby.
That running attack will be a tough matchup for Booker. … Claude 46 Booker 24

Happy (0-1) at Follett (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
Both teams took one on the chin last week and neither group wants to begin the season winless. A week ago, the Cowboys would have been viewed as heavy favorites, but the Panthers played the defending state champ tough and Happy looked sloppy. Look for the Cowboys to clean things up and walk away with a win. …Happy 46 Follett 36

Paducah (1-0) at Silverton (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Both teams were impressive in their opening game wins. Jakyen Wright for the Dragons and Sawyer Francis for the Owls will put on a show for the fans with Francis putting up the bigger numbers and helping Silverton pick up the victory. …Silverton 66 Paducah 54

Friday’s games

Class 5A

Palo Duro (0-1) vs. Caprock (0-1), 7 p.m.
Interesting city rivalry here (first played in 1963). Both teams need the W for good ol’ momentum and to avoid the 0-2 start. Both teams saw shining moments and rough stuff in those opening-season losses last week. Elusive PD quarterback Darien Lewis must be tackled if Caprock is to win. Caprock wins if it doubles down this week and matches a strong first half performance with one in the second half. … Palo Duro 21, Caprock 17

Tascosa (1-0) at Midland Legacy (1-0), 7 p.m.
Football fans watched these two teams play on different nights last week at Dick Bivins Stadium and saw each win big. Last year Tascosa put 47 on Legacy getting the impressive win. This year the Rebs offense is young in spots and figuring things out. Figure on Legacy QB Marcos Davila (Purdue verbal commit) and his massive o-line (weighing in at 300, 290 and 275) being the difference. … Legacy 38, Tascosa 31

Amarillo High (0-1) at Cleveland, N.M. (0-1), 7 p.m. (CST)
One thing is for sure in 2023 the Amarillo High non-district schedule maker doesn’t mess around. Last week AHS opened against District 2-6A favorite Midland Legacy (a 35-7 loss). This week it’s on the road taking on the defending 6A New Mexico state champs, already 2-0 this year. Bottom line? AHS is going to have find a way to score points as Cleveland’s stingy D, allowing 7.5 points in its two wins this year. … Cleveland 28, AHS 13

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 2-0 (1.000)
Season: 2-0 (1.000)

Class 4A

Perryton (0-1) at Canyon (1-0), 7 p.m.
There’s some potential for intrigue in this one based on last week. Canyon’s offense was perhaps a little better than expected with junior quarterback Boston Bell having a big game in routing Clovis, N.M., and Perryton quarterback Julian Cervantes led a rally which fell short at Dalhart. The Eagles have homefield and greater depth, though, making them a fairly obvious favorite. … Canyon 42, Perryton 21

Pampa (1-0) at Plainview (1-0), 7 p.m.
Both teams are coming off prolific offensive performances in their openers, as Brant Hill threw three touchdown passes to Bryce Lynn as Pampa withstood Big Spring 35-25, and Plainview hung up 45 in beating Levelland. There’s potential for a lot of points here, but Pampa has a little more depth and diversity on both sides of the ball when it comes to surviving a shootout. … Pampa 38, Plainview 28

Lubbock Estacado (1-0) at Dumas (0-1), 7 p.m.
These two teams couldn’t be entering this week from more opposite directions. Dumas got literally nothing going offensively in a 42-0 loss to Lubbock Cooper, and Estacado put up 65 in winning a shootout over Greenwood. This game will fall somewhere between those two extremes, with Dumas making a better showing on both sides of the ball but falling just short. … Estacado 28, Dumas 27

Wichita Falls High (0-1) at Hereford (1-0), 7 p.m.
Hereford has equaled last year’s win total after beating Caprock in the season opener as quarterback Kalub Ramirez appeared to be as good as advertised. Wichita Falls is looking for its first win of its final year as a high school before Wichita Falls ISD consolidates. The Coyotes won’t get it this week as the Whitefaces have confidence and homefield advantage. … Hereford 31, Wichita Falls 20

West Plains (0-1) at Midland Greenwood (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Wolves will get their longest road trip of the regular season out of the way when they go to Midland in a matchup which figures to be a shootout since West Plains and Greenwood combined for 92 points. Problem is, they combined to give up 112 points, which explains why they’re both looking for their first win. A late stop will boost West Plains. … West Plains 42, Greenwood 35

Randall (0-1) at Clovis, N.M. (0-2), 8 p.m. (CST)
This is the second straight week Clovis will face a Canyon ISD team after losing at Canyon last week. The Wildcats will have homefield advantage against the Raiders, who are looking for their first win under new coach Dan Sherwood. Randall will have to adapt to playing under New Mexico rules, but the Raiders will do so well enough for that first W. … Randall 28, Clovis 14

– Lee Passmore
Last week: 3-4 (.428)
Season: 3-4 (.428)

Class 3A

Bushland (1-0) at Canadian (1-0), 7 p.m.
For a second straight week the Falcons find themselves as the premiere game in the Texas Panhandle. Bushland has had the Wildcats number getting wins over Canadian the past two years. That’s something not many teams can say over the past two decades. This should be a dandy under the lights of Wildcats Stadium on Friday night. … Bushland 35, Canadian 31

Sundown (1-0) at Dalhart (1-0), 7 p.m.
This game was cancelled last season after the sudden passing of Dalhart student-athlete, Yahir Cancino. They’ll be a ton of mutual respect between these two teams after Sundown showed massive support to the Dalhart community after the tragic event. Sometimes it’s more than football so instead of a pick on this game, let’s play this one for Yahir.

Borger (0-1) at River Road (0-1), 7 p.m.
Both teams are chomping at the bit to get a win. The Bulldogs may have just a little more firepower than the Wildcats by the end of the night. … Borger 27, River Road 14

Lamesa (0-1) at Muleshoe (1-0), 7 p.m.
Look for the high-powered Muleshoe attack to keep on rolling by piling on the points. … Muleshoe 45, Lamesa 7

Childress (1-0) at Breckenridge (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Bobcats continue a gauntlet of a non-district schedule. Last year, the Buckaroos handled Childress, but this is a new year and a Childress squad that can play some defense. … Childress 22, Breckenridge 20

Brownfield (1-0) at Tulia (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Hornets stumbled out of the gate last week while the Cubs nabbed a big win over Post. Tulia will need to fix some mistakes to play with a talented Brownfield team. … Brownfield 35, Tulia 19

– Kale Steed
Last week: 4-3 (.571)
Season: 4-3 (.571)

Class 2A

Sunray (1-0) at Stratford (1-0), 7 p.m.
Here we go. This game has been circled on both team’s schedule for months. The Bobcats haven’t beaten the Elks since 2011. Does it that change or does the Stratford dominance continue? It will all come down to QB Armando Lujan’s air attack against the Elk physical prowess. … Stratford 35, Sunray 28

Farwell (1-0) at Vega (1-0), 7 p.m.
These two teams are no stranger to each other and are very similar. Both squads love to line up and hit their opponent in the mouth behind a grueling ground game. … Farwell 34, Vega 21

Friona (0-0) at Panhandle (1-0), 7 p.m.
This is the Chieftains season opener after a rare Week 1 bye week. The Panthers looked very impressive against Clarendon last week, but Friona is a little stiffer competition. … Friona 26, Panhandle 22

Wellington (1-0) at Lubbock Christian (1-0), 7 p.m.
This is definitely a matchup to keep an eye on. Lubbock Christian is a very good TAPPS team that has a very good QB in Welker Horn who can sling it. But always give the physical edge to Wellington. … Wellington 22, Lubbock Christian 21

Spearman (0-1) at Sanford-Fritch (0-1), 7 p.m.
It wasn’t the start either team wanted last week to open the 2023 campaign. Expect a physical battle between two teams that love to run the ball. … Spearman 28, Sanford-Fritch 13

Dimmitt (1-0) at Olton (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Bobcats are feeling good after getting their first win since the 2021 season. Going on the road to Olton though is never easy. … Olton 38, Dimmitt 20

Boys Ranch (0-1) at Highland Park (1-0), 7 p.m.
Here’s a matchup of two up and coming programs that are only getting better. Give the Hornets the edge behind their upbeat style of play. … Highland Park 35, Boys Ranch 20

Shamrock (0-1) at West Texas High (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Comanches looked good last week to open the Jeff smith era up in the right direction. Let’s see if WT High can do it again. … WT High 28, Shamrock 21

Texhoma, Okla. (1-0) at Gruver (1-0), 7 p.m.
These two border teams continue the rivalry for another year. Gruver running back Pratt McLain is the difference. … Gruver 24, Texhoma 14

Memphis (0-1) at Electra (0-1), 7 p.m.
Let’s take the Cyclones in a very competitive matchup that comes down to the fourth quarter. … Memphis 20, Electra 13

Hooker, Okla. (0-1) at Wheeler (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs offense needs a jolt at home this week after being shutout in the season opener. The Bulldogs aren’t a shabby team that can run the football. … Hooker 26, Wheeler 17

Clarendon (0-1) at Trinity Christian (0-1), 7 p.m.
This is a very scary matchup for the Broncos. Trinity Christian played toe-to-toe with defending UIL Class 2A Division II state champion Albany last week. … Trinity Christian 35, Clarendon 14

– Kale Steed
Last week: 8-3 (.727)
Season: 8-3 (.727)

Class 1A

McLean (1-0) at Benjamin (1-0), 7 p.m.
For the second straight week an Amarillo-area team will play against the best player in the state. Follett played Benjamin tougher than expected and McLean is just a hard-nosed scrappy team. Still, Grayson Rigdon is all that needs to be said. …Benjamin 56, McLean 38

Anton (0-1) at White Deer (0-1), 7 p.m.
The “dirty dozen” played hard before falling to Groom on the road last week. The
friendly confines of Buck Stadium and talented running back Brodie Weathers will lead
the home team to victory. …White Deer 48, Anton 42

Amherst (1-0) at Groom (1-0), 7 p.m.
This is the third meeting between these teams in the last 12 months with the Tigers
getting the playoff victory last November. Groom is a different team from a year ago
while the Bulldogs return their top two players. In a closer game than expected,
Amherst sneaks out of town with a win. … Amherst 70, Groom 64

Springlake-Earth (1-0) at Valley (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Mark this one down as the game of the week. Both teams had solid wins in the season opener and want to jump into the conversation as a legitimate Region I contender in Division I. This will likely be a game decided in the final two minutes with the Patriots walking away with the victory. …Valley 52, Springlake-Earth 48

Hart (1-0) at Nazareth (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
The Swifts learned a lot about their team last week in the loss to Whiteface. Nazareth
still has some talent and that will be on display as they pull out victory between two
teams separated by 15 miles of road. …Nazareth 63, Hart 27

Saturday’s game

Class 1A

Darrouzett (0-1) at Holy Cross (0-1), 3 p.m.
In a game between evenly matched teams the Longhorns make the long drive home
happy. …Darrouzett 42, Holy Cross 32

– Craig Sperry

Season: 9-3 (.750)
