Riley Segura, Panhandle basketball, Jr.
On the court: The Panhandle Ettes put together one of the best seasons in school history, finishing the 2025-2026 season with an incredible 38-1 overall record while capturing the programs third UIL state championship last week. Segura, the junior point guard, and one of the leaders of the Ettes, was masterful in a pair of wins last week to help Panhandle accomplish that amazing feat. In a 41-32 victory over Cisco in the UIL Class 2A Division I state semifinal, Segura went for a team-high 17 points. Then, in a 38-25 state championship victory over Mason, Segura set the tone early on the way to 19 points and eight rebounds to earn state tournament MVP.
Segura finishes her junior campaign pouring in averaging 12.4 points a game, shooting 47.3 percent from the field. She also pulled down 5.9 boards a night and dished out three assists.
Coach Rob Schmucker: “Riley is something special and means so much to our program. She is a tremendous floor leader, and with the ball in her hands, we know things are always going to be great. She has grown up a ton from just last year and does so many little things that people don’t see. Her defense and rebounding have come a long way, and I’m just thrilled to see the hard work pay off for her and the entire team. Riley, along with the rest of the team are heroes to the little girls of Panhandle, and I think that’s a how you build a program. Those girls want to be the next ones that carry on the success.”
Segura: “Winning this state championship meant everything, because it was a year-long goal. We fell short last year and we never forgot that. We had a very tough schedule and we knew each and every week, we just had to keep getting better and improving. In that state championship game, I knew I needed to be there for my team. I was able to get to the basket early and knock down the shots. Hitting those shots really helped my confidence and helped us get going and we all played so well. This season was just incredible.”
