Class 3A roundup: No. 1 Canadian blanks Friona, Spearman, Childress roll; Bushland passes big test

The Canadian Wildcats remained unbeaten with a 57-0 trouncing of Friona in a District 3-3A Division II victory Friday night.Head

Canadian Quarterback Grant McCook led the Wildcat offense to 577 total yards over the Chieftains.

In only two quarters of work the senior threw for 285 yard passing with a pair of touchdowns.

The Canadian defense was equally impressive limitinf Friona’s offense to 195 total offensive yards.

Canadian (3-0 in district) remains undefeated at 8-0, while pushing its district win streak to 35 straight games dating back to 2012.

Friona falls to 6-2, 1-2.

Spearman tames Tulia

Spearman scored on its first offensive play and never looked back, getting a key District 3-3A Division II win at home Friday.

Spearman improves to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in district. Tulia is 4-4, 1-2.

The Lynx set the tone early. After forcing a Tulia punt, Spearman quarterback Bren Thompson lined up at wide out, and took a jet sweep 71-yards for a score on the Lynx opening play.

Spearman rolled from that point forward scoring at least one touchdown in every quarter.

Thompson ran for 186 yards and threw for 70 with a pair of touchdowns.

Jack Wilkerson added 184 yards on the ground with 53 receiving yards for a combined four touchdowns.

Childress wins battle of Bobcats

Childress used a big second half to get past Dimmitt in a battle of Bobcats in a 42-0 shutout at Dimmitt on Friday.

Childress improves to 2-1 in District 3-3A Division II and 2-6 overall. Dimmitt drops to 1-7, 0-3.

Childress broke open a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to a 28-point second half.

Running back Miguel Salinas tallied 105 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns in the victory.

District 2-3A Division I

Bushland holds off Shallowater for huge road win

It was a tough fight, however, Bushland stayed undefeated with a hard earned 28-24 against rival Shallowater in a District 2-3A Division I showdown at Todd Field in Shallowater Friday night.

Shallowater was able to keep the dangerous Falcon offense off of the field for a majority of the game as Shallowater out gained Bushland 445 to 224 in total yards.

Bushland built a 28-12 lead before the Mustangs cut the deficit to 28-24 with 4:36 to play, but weren’t able to get any closer.

The biggest difference in the game was the Mustangs inability to make extra-points, going 0 for 4.

Bushland Quarterback Jared Thomas led the Falcons with 213 yards passing and three touchdowns. His go-to man was leading receiver Jake Orcutt who had five receptions for 176 yards and two scores.

No. 5 Bushland is now 8-0 and 3-0 in district. Shallowater falls to 4-4, 2-1.

River Road finds win column

Coach Bryan Welps and the River Road Wildcats earned their first district win out gunning Muleshoe 50-28 at home Friday night.

River Road’s offense chewed up yards rushing for 349 of its 400 total yards in the game.

Quarterback Lance Welps was the catalyst, piling up 253 yards rushing on 23 carries with five touchdowns. The junior also threw for another score and made eight tackles on defense with an interception.

River Road is now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in District 2-3A Division I.

Muleshoe drops to 0-8, 0-3.
