On the diamond: Not many hitters are hotter than Gavina heading into the postseason. Last week during Bushland’s wins over Dimmitt and Dalhart, the versatile senior showed what he could do at the plate in a major way.

In those victories, Gavina went a perfect 5-for-5 with two homers, two doubles, a triple, totaling nine RBIs. For his efforts the shortstop was selected as the 3A Texas High School Baseball Hitter of the Week.

On the season Gavina hit .700 in district and enters the playoffs hitting .536 with three homers, 11 doubles with 32 RBIs.

Head coach Todd Espe: “Kade is a leader. He’s not the most vocal player but he brings a lot of energy and leads by example every single day. Whether it’s practice or in a game he leaves everything he has on the field. He goes as we go and what’s nice is you can put him at any position on the field. He hits the ball extremely well and he’s just fun to coach and a great young man.”

Gavina: “We’ve been playing really well and we’re starting to heat up at the right time as the playoffs get started. We are playing with a chip on are shoulders after falling short last year to Wall. We want to make another deep run and see if we can’t make it to state. As for myself, my goal is just to keep working on my character and making my team better. I just want to maintain a positive attitude and be the best for this team.”
