Class 3A-2A roundup – Vega clinches 1-2A Division II title, Wellington claims 2-2A DII championship

District 1-2A Division II

Vega outlasts Sunray for district championship 

Vega used an explosive second quarter and then were able to hang on late to knock off Sunray 47-39 on a cold, damp Friday evening at Longhorns Stadium.

The victory gives the Longhorns the outright District 1-2A Division II championship as Vega wins its fifth game in a row ending the regular season at 6-4 overall and 4-0 in district. Sunray (8-2, 3-1) will be the No. 2-seed out of the district.

Vega opened the game up with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 33-13 lead into halftime. The Longhorns had as much as a 47-19 advantage until the Bobcats closed the gap late, 47-39, but were unable to make the comeback complete.

Quarterback and do-it-all star Joaquin Segovia torched Sunray behind his powerful offensive line. Doing all of his damage on the ground, Segovia stacked up 228 yards rushing on 21 carries with four touchdowns. Teammate Jose Silerio added 123 yards on 13 totes with a pair of TDs.

Boys Ranch ends long playoff drought

Boys Ranch rallied for a late touchdown to nab a thrilling 12-7 win over Booker on Thursday night and clinch the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 1-2A Division II.

It’s the Roughriders (5-5, 1-3) first trip to the playoffs since the 2008 season snapping a 14-year drought.

Down 7-6 in the closing minute, Boys Ranch quarterback Isaiah Brown found his way into the endzone from 4-yards out for the eventual game-winning TD with 31 seconds to play. That was a part of a big night for Brown who passed for 132 yards, ran for 126 yards on 27 carries including the late touchdown. Teammate Rowdy Barnes had a huge game on the defensive side making 22 tackles, five of those for a loss.

District 2-2A Division II 

Wellington routs Clarendon for district crown 

Wellington gained a measure of revenge from a year ago and won the outright District 2-2A Division II title in the process by routing Clarendon 44-8 on the road on Friday night.

Wellington ends an impressive regular season at 9-1 and went 5-0 in district giving up only 16 total points. Wellington’s defense absolutely shutdown Clarendon holding the Broncos offense to 129 total yards. The offensive line gave Clarendon’s defense fits allowing quarterback Carson Tarver to pile up 89 rushing yards with two scores and throw for 103 yards with two more TDs.

Shamrock will be the No. 3-seed after downing Memphis 55-20. Memphis will be in the No. 4 spot. Caden Peevey torched the Cyclones for five touchdowns on 169 yards rushing in the victory.

District 1-2A Division I

Highland Park claims fourth spot

Highland Park is headed to the postseason thanks to a 28-13 win over Sanford-Fritch in a win or go home game on Friday at Hornets Stadium.

The Hornets (3-7, 2-3) claim the fourth and final spot out of District 1-2A Division I. Quarterback Brady Thompson went 14-of-26 for 230 yards with two touchdowns and returned an interception for a score on defense. Tavian Vrede showed his versatility carrying the ball 24 times for 108 yards with a TD and caught three passes for 49 yards.

District 3-2A Division II

Bovina locks up Lockney

The Bovina Mustangs are getting set for the playoffs after beating Lockney 38-26 on Thursday night.

Bovina (4-6, 3-2) will be the No. 3-seed out of District 3-2A Division II. Mustang quarterback Daniel Herrera had a huge outing going 16-of-27 for 300 yards passing with three touchdown passes and ran for another score.

District 3-3A Division II

Playoff positioning all played out

While Canadian wrapped up the outright District 3-3A Division II title blowing out Dimmitt 77-0 on Friday, Childress-Friona, Spearman and Tulia all had big matchups to determine playoff seeding.

Spearman (3-7 overall) was able to extend its season blasting Tulia 59-6 and take the fourth and final playoff spot out of the district. Childress (6-4) also made quick work of Friona 45-9 to snag the No. 2-seed behind Canadian, and Friona (5-5) will be the in the third spot.

During the Bobcat win over the Chieftains quarterback Drake Rabe tore up the Friona secondary going 14-of-30 for 338 yards with four touchdowns. Lamont Nickleberry was Rabe’s go-to target hauling in seven catches for 145 yards with a pair of scores.

Spearman’s Cason Mackie drove through the snow for 183 yards on only nine carries with a pair of touchdowns.

District 2-3A Division I

Muleshoe rallies to beat Dalhart

Muleshoe erased a 13-point halftime deficit to get past Dalhart 27-23 for a thrilling win on Friday night.

The Mules (7-3 overall) clinch the third spot out of District 2-3A Division I, while Dalhart (4-5 overall) will be the No. 4-seed.

Quarterback Nathan Martens threw for 161 yards with three touchdowns. Receiver Irvin Torres snagged four catches for 61 yards with a pair of scores.
