Class 2A roundup- Panhandle blitzes Vega, Highland Park stays unbeaten, Stratford rolls over Gruver

Panhandle puts it on Vega to stay unbeaten 

Panhandle is off to a fast start on the season as the Panthers cruised to a lopsided 51-13 road win at Vega on Friday night.

Panhandle quarterback Broxton Robinson has put his name in for an early season MVP candidate with another all-around outstanding performance. The Longhorns (1-2) defense couldn’t slow down the sophomore through the air or on the ground. Robinson torched Vega putting up 159 rushing yards on 19 carries finding the endzone four times. Robinson was then a near perfect 10-for-12 throwing for 187 yards with two more scores combining for 346 yards and six touchdowns.

Teammate Brayson Choate chipped in with five carries for 88 yards with a touchown and Landyn Durst added four catches for 57 yards with a TD.

Panhandle is now a perfect 3-0 to start 2023.

Highland Park out guns Shamrock

Highland Park is off to its best start since 2014 thanks to a big 56-30 road win at Shamrock on Friday evening.

The Hornets turned the tables in the second quarter. Trailing 16-6 after the first quarter, Highland Park took complete control scoring 28 points in the second stanza to take a 34-24 lead into halftime. The Hornets then took over the game in the second half by outscoring the Irish 24-6 in the final two quarters.

Quarterback Brady Thompson showed his accuracy going 12-of-13 for 228 yards with two passing two touchdowns. Thompson added two more scores on the ground rushing for 28 yards. Receiver Ben Ho was a go-to target for Thompson snagging five catches for 114 yards with a touchdown, and Alex Conway hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Braxton Allen had a great night for the Irish on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Allen caught nine passes for 160 yards with two touchdowns. On defense, Allen made seven tackles.

Highland Park is 3-0 for the first time since 2014. Shamrock falls to 1-2.

Stratford piles up points to take down Gruver 

The Stratford Elks stayed perfect on the season by piling on the points during a 58-26 victory at Gruver on Friday night.

The Elks move to 3-0 over all on the year while Gruver suffers its first loss falling to 2-1.

Stratford opened up with a huge first half by taking a 38-7 lead into halftime behind the stellar performance of quarterback Bryce Braden. Braden outmatched anything the Greyhounds tried to do to stop the bulldozer as the junior rushed for 120 yards on seven carries with two scores and threw for 265 yards on 11-of-19 attempts with another three touchdowns. Defensively, Braden was in on 12 total tackles. Julio Valdez complimented Braden with a game-high 14 tackles and caught two passes for 153 yards with two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. Isreal Licon snagged three catches for 108 yards with a touchdown and scored a rushing TD in the win.

Farwell runs over Sundown 

A balanced offense and stout defense was more than enough for Farwell to stay undefeated by getting a 23-7 win on the road at Sundown on Friday night.

The Steers (3-0 overall) defense was stellar holding the Roughnecks to 167 total yards, 62 of those on the ground, on 65 plays. Safety captain Corey Stancell did his job on that side of the ball racking up eight tackles with two interceptions. Teammate Alonzo Lozano racked up seven tackles, three for a loss with a pick of his own.

The Farwell offense was efficient behind junior quarterback Jonathan Armstrong who went 13-of-20 for 185 yards with two touchdown tosses. Ryder McElroy made the most of the passing attack catching three passes for 60 yards with a score and Stancell added 53 yards rushing on the offensive side of the ball.

West Texas High hammers Boys Ranch 

West Texas High bounced back from its first loss of the year by rolling over Boys Ranch 48-6 at home on Friday night.

The Comanches offense was on point putting together 411 yards of offense with 316 coming from the ground attack.

Keaton Fellers was the story of the game for WT High as the quarterback used his legs to rush for 96 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns and threw for 95 yards on 6-of-10 completions for another score. Teammate Kelby Sherwood knifed his way through the Boys Ranch defense for 193 yards rushing on 18 carries with a touchdown of his own.

The Comanches move to 2-1 overall on the season while the Roughriders are still looking for their first win falling to 0-3.

Sunray blasts Dimmitt

Sunray scored early and often that resulted in an 80-0 blowout win at home over Dimmitt on Friday night.

The Bobcats move to 2-1 overall while Dimmitt fall to 1-2.

It was all Sunray in this battle of Bobcats. Quarterback Armando Lujan picked a part the Dimmitt secondary throwing for 351 yards on 19-of-31 passing with six touchdowns. Lujan also added a rushing score. Dominic Casares carried the ball seven times for 58 yards with a touchdown and Ty McDowell caught four passes for 75 yards with a score.

Defensively, Sunray forced nine turnovers and held Dimmitt to 73 total yards. Damian Barragan had a pick six for a touchdown and teammate Noel Orozco had a fumble recovery for a TD.
