Class 2A roundup – Gruver rolls over Sanford-Fritch, Farwell downs New Deal, Wellington cruises

Gruver dismantles Sanford-Fritch

Gruver had no issue going on the road and taking care of business by nabbing a 39-14 victory at Sanford-Fritch on Friday night.

The Hounds open the season at 1-0 under new head football coach Kurt Haberthur. The Eagles fall to 0-1.

Gruver quarterback Briggs Satterfield had a solid first outing throwing for three touchdowns against the Sanford-Fritch defense. Running back Pratt McLain had a pair of rushing touchdowns and Pake Babbs dominated on defense with four sacks.

Farwell outguns New Deal 

Farwell erased an early 13-point deficit to rally past New Deal for a big 40-30 victory at home on Friday night.

The Steers (1-0) trailed 13-0 after the first quarter but caught offensive fire in the second quarter putting up 20 points to take a 20-16 lead into halftime. After the Lions (0-1) regained momentum to take a 30-20 lead in the third quarter, Farwell turned it on ending the contest with 20 unanswered points to end the game with the 40-30 victory.

Senior standout Corey Stancell put the Steers on his back rushing for 134 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns. Stancell also had four tackles on defense with a sack. Teammate Jonathan Armstrong showed his dual-threat ability from the quarterback position throwing for 196 yards while rushing for 108 yards combining for three touchdowns.

West Texas High takes down Hale Center

West Texas High head football coach Jeff Smith picked up an emotional win over his former team with his Comanches knocking off Hale Center 20-14 on Friday night at Hale Center.

The Comanches (1-0) took an early 12-0 lead after back-to-back touchdown scampers from quarterback Cayde Winters. After the Owls cut the deficit, 12-6, Winters then went to the air in the second quarter finding TJ Riggs for a 10-yard scoring toss giving WT High a 20-6 advantage. Before leaving with an injury, Winters was having a huge evening on the ground rushing for 159 yards on only six carries with a pair of TDs. Riggs added 38 yards rushing and had 24 yards receiving with a TD.

Hale Center drops to 0-1 on the year.

Highland Park takes out Tulia 

The Highland Park Hornets are off to a strong start to 2023 getting a big 33-21 home win over Tulia in a battle of Hornets on Friday night at Highland Park.

Elyes Torres was a mismatch for the Tulia Defense. Torres had four carries for 97 yards, made four catches for 81 yards for a total of four touchdowns. Tavian Vrede chipped in with 81 yards rushing with a score, and Quarterback Brady Thompson overcame an interception and a fumble to complete 13-of-19 passes for 178 yards with a pair of scores.

Highland Park moves to 1-0 on the year while Tulia falls to 0-1.

Panhandle pummels Clarendon 

For a second straight year, the Panhandle Panthers have handed Clarendon a season-opening lopsided loss. On Friday night, the Panthers used a prominent ground game to run past Clarendon 22-12 at Broncos Stadium.

Quarterback back Broxton Robinson led the heavy attack with 102 yards on the ground on 20 carries adding a touchdown. Robinson was also 5-of-9 through the air for 111 yards and another score. Teammate Brayson Choate tacked on 80 yards on 12 carries with two scores while getting in on six tackles on defense.

Panhandle is now 1-0 on the year. Clarendon falls to 0-1.

Sunray smokes Hooker, Okla. 

Sunray shook off a slow start to go off for a big second half grabbing a convincing 49-23 victory at home on Friday night.

The Bobcats struggled in the first half as the Bulldogs led 15-8 at the half. However, the second half was a completely different story. Sunray settled in and went to work scoring 36 unanswered points outscoring the Bulldogs 41-8 in the final two frames.

Talented quarterback Armando Lujan picked up where he left off last season for the Bobcats. Lujan sliced up the Hooker defense going 26-of-38 for 338 yards with four touchdown tosses and ran for another score. Receiver Dason Bennett hauled in seven of those passes for 108 yards with four touchdowns followed by Ty McDowell who caught six passes for 90 yards. Kagan Davis also got in on the fun with 69 yards receiving and a TD.

Sunray is off to a 1-0 start and will play at Stratford (1-0) on Friday in a highly anticipated non-district matchup. Hooker falls to 0-1.

Vega puts away Bovina 

Vega overcame a sluggish start to pull away from Bovina for a 39-26 road win in the season opener.

Vega led 19-14 at the break until the Longhorns were able to open the contest up in the second half to get away from a pesky Mustangs squad. Vega quarterback Casen Brorman went 10-of-20 for 100 yards with two touchdowns. Reese Robinson, Jose Silerio and Braden Brorman made for a physical backfield. Robinson scampered for 80 yards with a score, Silerio punched in two touchdowns on 60 yards rushing and Braden added 70 yards on 17 carries with a TD.

Defensively, Gatlin Green paved the way for the Longhorns making 15 tackles and had 10 pancakes on the offensive line. Cole Blasingame racked up 10 tackles with two for a loss.

Vega is off to a 1-0 start in 2023 as Bovina drops to 0-1.

Wellington blanks Frederick

Wellington outmatched Frederick, Okla., on both sides of the ball to earn a 30-0 shutout victory to open the 2023 campaign in fine fashion on Friday night at Powell Field in Wellington.

The Skyrockets used balance rushing for 184 yards, passing for 157 yards to tally 341 total yards for the contest.

All the scoring came in the first half with Nixon Folk scoring the first touchdown of the season on a 4-yard run putting Wellington up 6-0. From there, it was all Wellington putting up a 30-0 advantage heading into the third quarter.

Quarterback Carson Tarver was 6-of-7 for 101 yards with a touchdown pass. Teammate Travon Lewis led a loaded ground attack with 78 yards on six carries with a score.

Wellington is 1-0 to open the season while Frederick falls to 0-1.
