Kyler Read, Dalhart football, Jr.

On the field: Read put on another amazing display that has become the normal this season for the junior dual-threat quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound bruiser stepped up and helped lead Dalhart to a huge District 2-3A Division I win over Shallowater 21-14 with a fourth quarter that won’t soon be forgotten.

On the ground, Read ate up the Mustangs rushing for 117 yards on 32 carries and then threw for 224 yards on 12-of-26 passing for three touchdowns.

But it was the final quarter where Read led an improbable 11:52 minute drive on 23 plays that took the entire fourth quarter behind a heavy dose of the junior dual-threat quarterback running the ball that earned the win for the Golden Wolves.

On the season, Read has already totaled 1,035 yards rushing with 1,253 passing yards combining for 27 touchdowns.

Coach Joey Read: “It was a great win for us. We just try to take it one week at a time and work hard. I usually don’t say anything magical in the pregame speech but last week before Shallowater I made sure to tell them that there wasn’t one sportswriter in the state picking us to win that game. I just don’t want these guys buying into what they read. They got after it and that final quarter, and that 23-play drive was something special. As for Kyler. He means so much to what we’re doing. He’s a great leader and he could probably coach this team. He’s always in the weight room and he’s all about his teammates. I’m very proud of him.”

Read: “We had a rough year last year, so over the summer the team made a promise to each other to push one another and love one another and hold each other accountable. We are all very close and we just want to be successful. Hats off to Shallowater. They are a very good football team and hard hitters. That was huge for us to get that win and gave us a ton of confidence. I didn’t even realize what we were doing in that fourth quarter because I was so involved in the offense and just trying to get the win but afterwards, I couldn’t believe it. But I can’t take much credit. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without this team. The offensive line, the running backs, the receivers, the defense. We’re all one.”
