Eli Garcia, Dalhart track and field, Jr.
On the track: Garcia has come into his own this track and field season by winning the District 1-3A pole vault title along with the 1-3A/ 2-3A area championship. The Dalhart junior carried that moment into the Region I-3A track and field meet in Abilene on Saturday by claiming his first ever regional title by clearing 15-feet-6 inches. It’s the first regional title for the Garcia, who has topped 16-feet this season.
This will be Garcia’s second straight appearance at the UIL Class 3A state track and field meet which set for May 14 at Mike A Myers Stadium in Austin. Last season, Garcia took home a bronze medal.
Coach Kiel Kitchens: “It’s awesome to see the track season that Eli is having. He deserves this and it shows the work he is putting in. Eli has matured and he’s gotten better with his strength and constant work in the pole vault. He’s consistent, he’s focused, and he’s even filled in on some relay events when we’ve needed help on the team. He’s just a great kid and he’s not scared of the big moment. He has a great mindset and knows what his goals are in front of him.”
Garcia: “Winning a regional championship was something special. I had been a little banged up, and wasn’t sure I was going to be able to jump, but I made it back in time. I was going up against some really good competition and I feel that always makes me better. I think I’ve really improved on my speed this year. I’m more consistent than last year and I’m focused. I can’t wait to compete at state again this year. It’s a great atmosphere, and my goal is to come home with another medal.”
