Amarillo College head cross country coach Sean Hargrove knew Lane Kenney and Mia Lujan had the potential to have outstanding freshman seasons this fall.

But he didn’t quite expect the duo to rewrite the AC record book just two weeks into the season.

“What Mia and Lane did was phenomenal. They show up to practice and work hard every day. Their performances speak to their work ethics,” Hargrove said. “The whole team performed great and ran beyond my expectations.”

Lujan, a Dumas High grad, and Kenney, a Tascosa High alum, clocked 5K and 8K school-record times on Friday at the Aggie Duels in Lawton, Oklahoma.

After not competing in a single 5K race at UIL sanctioned events in high school, Lujan set the Lady Badgers 5K school record in AC’s second meet of the season.

The Dumas native crossed the finish line at the Aggie Duels in a time of 19 minutes 20 seconds – a mark that is 1 second faster than the previous team record held by former NJCAA Division I All American Ariyah Gomez.

Kenney, an Amarillo native, dashed out with the top group from the start of the race and maintained a sprint-like tempo throughout the entirety of the 4.97-mile haul.

The result – beating the school record by three seconds in an 8K time of 25 minutes 50 seconds – topping Gabe Enriquez’s previous top mark.

The Badger women’s team led the trio of junior college programs competing at the event and finished in fifth place overall.

In an 82-runner field, Mia Lujan placed 17th, Mia Regalado took 29th (20:03), and Mallory Moore finished in 30th (20:07).
