Amarillo High cruises in 3-5A opener

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies were more than impressive making an early season statement to the District 3-5A by handling upstart Caprock 80-13 on Friday night at the Caprock Activity Center.

This contest was never close. The Lady Sandies marched out to a commanding 27-0 first quarter lead and held a dominant 43-2 lead by halftime. Jada Graves and Taytum Bell combined for 39 points. Graves led all scorers with 23 with Bell following pouring in 16.

AHS is now 24-4 overall and 1-0 in 3-5A. Caprock, which had a great non-district performance, drops to 15-6 overall and 0-1.

Farwell upends Panhandle

In a battle of top five teams, Farwell pulled away from Panhandle to get the upper hand of the first meeting between the district rivals 52-31.

The No. 3-ranked Lady Blue win their 20th game of the year moving to 20-3 overall and 1-0 in District 3-2A. The Ettes drop to 18-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Panhandle had battled back from a 14-point halftime deficit trailing 32-28 by the end of the third quarter. However, Farwell was able to pull away in the fourth for the win outscoring the Ettes 20-3 in the final frame.

Bella Jaime led the scoring effort with 15 points with teammates Makylee Baldwin and Landri Richey each tacking on 11.

Russell, Francis each hit special milestone

Two of the top players in not only Class 1A but in the Texas Panhandle recently achieved special milestones.

McLean sharpshooting guard Kasidy Russell and Silverton’s Brenna Francis each went over the 1,000-point mark for their stellar careers before 2023 came to an end.

Russell hit her 1,000 points at the Groom Tournament last weekend, while Francis scored her 1,000th point during a Farwell Tournament in Decmember.

Both Russell and Francis opened district play on fire. Russell poured in 22 points to lead McLean over Lefors, 86-25, and Francis scored 12 in the Lady Owls 41-27 road win at Groom.
