It was an exciting afternoon with a dramatic finish during the 1-3A/ 2-3A Area Track and Field Meet Monday on the campus of West Texas A&M.

Coming down to the mile relay, Idalou needed points and were able to get them in the clutch to surpass Slaton to win the team championship with 99 points to Slaton’s 95.

Idalou trailed by eight points heading into the mile relay. Coming down to the anchor leg, Adrian Salas was able to track down Canadian’s CJ Jiminez to get the bronze medal recording a time of 3:30.42 to help gain the team title. Salas had a strong meet throughout the day by not only qualifying for the regional meet as a part of the mile relay, but Salas also punched a ticket to regional getting second in the 100-meter dash (10.83) and took bronze in the 200-meter sprint (22.10).

Teammate Cooper Hammock-Wilson played his part for the Wildcats. Hammock advanced to regional in three events as a part of the mile relay team and then got on the podium with a silver in the 300-meter hurdles (40.93) and a bronze in the 110-hurdles (15.43).

Dalhart had highlight performances in a third place finish (82 points). Brett Alver lit up the track winning the 200-meter dash by racing to a time of 22 seconds. Alver also helped the Golden Wolves with a gold as a part of the 800-meter relay (1:29.73), to go with a bronze in the sprint relay (42.86). Teammate Cole James is headed to regional in three events. James was impressive during the 110-meter hurdle race getting a time of 15.12). James was on the sprint relay team that found the silver medal podium, and earned a bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (41.45). In the field events, Eli Garcia put on a show in the pole vault by clearing a season-best 16-feet for a gold medal.

Bushland had two outstanding outings. The Falcons two-way lineman on the football field went double gold with a toss of 165-feet-10 inches in the discus, then threw a 55-8 1/2 for a win in the shot put. In the high jump, Bushland’s Kannon King had quite the morning clearing 6-feet-6 inches to win gold.

Slaton’s Z’Qedrian Whaley and Lubbock Roosevelt’s Billy Bond took home multiple medals and will be heading to regionals. Whaley won four medals on the day highlighted by a 46-6 1/4 for a gold in the triple jump. Whaley’s second gold medal was a part of the sprint relay team that ran away from the competition for a time of 42.71. Whaley was back on the medal stand thanks to bronze in the long jump (21-7 1/4) and on the Tigers 800-meter relay team (1:31.37). Bond carried on a great season with a pair of gold in the distance events. Bond outpaced the field for his first gold in the 800-meter race recording a time of 2:00.93, and then was victorious in the 1600-meter run timing at 4:38.

Using a complete team performance, the Idalou Lady Cats were able to make a sweep of the team championships, scoring 128 points during the area meet.

Shining in the team titles were freshmen Jackie Alvidrez and Brylee Heflin. Alvidrez led Idalou by advancing to regionals in four events. Alvidrez made her name on the day winning the 100-meter hurdle, running a fluid race to take home a time of 15.49. Alvidrez won a silver medal in the high jump by clearing 5-feet, and earned two bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (49.96), and a part of the 800-meter relay team (1:46.99).

Heflin did her job helping the sprint relay team gain silver with a 50.31. In individual races, Heflin was second in the 100-meter dash (12.09) and then was fourth in the 200-meter (26.10).

The MVP of the meet was definitely Dalhart’s Victoria Terrazas. The senior scored 30 of the Lady Wolves 69 points, and left the competition behind in all three long distance events, racing to three gold medals. In the morning session, Terrazas clocked a time of 12.26.7. In the afternoon running finals, Terrazas was back on the gold medal podium thanks to a 2:28.7 during the 800-meter race and then won her third gold outpacing the field for a 5:38.2 in the 1600-meter race .

The Bushland relay teams had a superb showcase. The sprint relay tam Jordyn Boyett, Reese Snyder, Emily Carter and Kirkland Hale sped to a gold registering a time of 49.38. Later in the finals, the Lady Falcons 800-meter relay squad of Carter, Jaralyn Watson, Reagan Snyder and Hale took home gold with a 1:44.25.

Slaton basketball standout Brocoiya Harris proved her versatility as an athlete. Harris went double gold tossing out a gold medal throw of 36-6 1/4 to claim the shot put gold, and then won the discus launching a 114-6.

Canadian’s Kylie Cavalier hit a new season-best mark leaping to a 37-5 for a win in the triple jump and was bronze in the high jump (5-feet). Dimmitt’s Lily Rodriguez had a nice day qualifying in three events. Rodriguez blazed a time of 25.56 to get a gold in the 200-meter dash, and was bronze in the 100-meter dash (12.29). Rodriguez advanced also advanced to regional in the pole vault with another bronze (9-feet).
