West Plains, Dumas destined for regional championship
District 4-4 was once again dominant at the midway point of the UIL playoffs, especially in Division I.
The West Plains Lady Wolves were one of those impressive teams that will be moving on as the Lady Wolves were able to make it a two-game sweep of Springtown thanks to a 5-4 win in game one, followed by a 7-1 victory to claim the regional semifinal championship Thursday and Friday on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]West Plains leaned on veteran Jaylen Kaps and the senior didn’t let her team down. Kaps was sensational in the circle and superb at the plate in both wins. In the circle, Kaps kept Springtown off balance throwing back-to-back complete game efforts, scattering nine total hits over 14 innings, allowing just nine total hits and registering a combined 22 strikeouts. Kaps was also clutch at the plate in the series opener delivering a two-run double.
Teammate Sydney Garza also came up clutch in the opening game with a two-run homer.
The Lady Wolves are now set for a district showdown with Dumas. The Demonettes continue to cruise through the playoffs with another outstanding effort, this time mauling Mineral Wells 16-4 and 14-0 for a rather easy sweep in the regional semifinal Thursday and Friday at the Frenship Memorial Softball Complex.
An explosive Demonettes offense at up Lady Rams pitching with 32 total hits in the series on top of hitting eight home runs.
Aaliyah Chairez had three of the homers for Dumas over the two games, finishing with a total of seven RBIs. Mia Fry and Yari Vargas each had two long balls in the series.
West Plains (27-11) and Dumas (34-2-1) are now set to square off in the Division I regional championship in a best-of-three championship beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at West Texas High in Stinnett. Game two will be at noon, Friday with a game three, if necessary, 30 minutes following game two.
Randall takes down Snyder
An offensive power surge was enough to get Randall past Snyder during a UIL Class 4A Division II regional semifinal Thursday and Friday at the Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Softball Complex.
Randall outlasted the Lady Tigers for a 9-5 win in game one, then out slugged Snyder for an 18-11 victory to get the sweep.
Randall picked up its 30th win of the season, moving to 30-8 overall and will now face Brock (23-9) in the Division with the best of a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Abilene Christian. Game two is set for 6 p.m. Friday, and game three will happen at 2 p.m. Saturday, if necessary. Brock was able to get a two-game sweep of Canyon to end the Lady Eagles season at 24-15.
In the opener, the Lady Raiders trailed 5-2, only to rally back thanks to a six-run top of the sixth inning. In the comeback win, Khloe Acosta was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. In Friday’s second game, Acosta was at it again going 3-for-5 with a homer and a double to finish with six RBIs. Teammate Kaley Wiseman was also clutch hitting two long balls to tally four RBIs.
