The first two rounds of the UIL Team Tennis playoffs are in the books and area teams in the Texas Panhandle and South Plains have made their mark. Squads will compete in regional quarterfinal action on Monday and Tuesday with a chance to play in this weekends regional tournaments.
Class 5A
Amarillo High dispatched Abilene Cooper and El Paso Bel Air in the first two rounds to move into the Regional Quarterfinals. The No. 8-ranked Sandie netters will now get their biggest test of the year as they face the state’s top ranked team in Abilene Wylie, Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the courts of Lubbock Cooper Liberty.

The Tascosa Rebels have been solid all season and that has continued in the postseason. After picking up a hard fought 10-7 victory over Wichita Falls Legacy, they had no issues with El Paso Americas grabbing a 10-1 win. Next up for Tascosa is El Paso High which took down Lubbock High 12-3.
Class 4A
Number 2-ranked Canyon leads a large contingent of Texas Panhandle and South Plains teams into the third round. For the Eagles, they have yet to lose a match dropping Graham and Brock by identical 10-0 scores. This sets up a pivotal match against No. 8 Vernon on Tuesday at Plainview with the action starting at 11 a.m. Canyon beat Vernon 12-7 earlier in the season so this should be a great battle among two highly ranked squads.
Frenship Memorial, competing in their first varsity action ever has been impressive. The Panthers took down Big Spring, 13-1, in bi-district action and cruised in area with an 11-1 win over San Elizario. This sets up a district 4-4A rematch with Seminole on Monday. Frenship Memorial won a tight 10-9 decision in district action earlier in the year. Doubles action will start at 10 a.m. on the courts of Lubbock-Cooper Liberty.
On the other side of the bracket, perennial power Randall has taken down Burkburnett and Peaster to cruise into the quarters where they will face district rival West Plains. The Wolves beat Iowa Park 10-3 in bi-district play then toppled Lampasas, 10-5 in the area round.
That sets up the third meeting of the year between the No. 3-ranked Raiders and No. 15-ranked West Plains. Randall dominated the first two matches in District 5-4A play but the Wolves will be looking to pull the big upset at their home courts on Tuesday with action starting at 10 a.m.
Another good matchup on this side of the bracket involves Lubbock-Cooper Liberty and Shallowater. The Patriots netters have yet to lose a match against Midland Greenwood and Pecos while the Mustangs took down Snyder, 11-4, before squeezing by Fort Stockton 10-8.
Liberty won District 4-4A and Shallowater finished fourth with the Patriots taking a 13-6 victory right before the start of the playoffs. First serve will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday on the courts of Lubbock All-Saints.
