The West Texas A&M Buffaloes picked up their first win of the 2025 season and did by putting on an offensive exhibition during a 58-27 blowout against Western New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference opener on Saturday night at Ben Altamirano Field in Silver City, N.M.
The Buffs offense, which was led by an explosive passing game of 588 yards, posted 684 total yards of offense against the Mustangs. That effort marks the most offense for WTAMU since Oct. 26, 2013 when WTAMU totaled 693 yards against McMurry. The 588 passing yards is the most for a WTAMU team since Nov. of 2010 with 605 against East Central.
The Buffs (1-2 overall, 1-0 in LSC) remain on the road with the longest trip of the year set for Central Washington at 8 p.m. Saturday.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]WTAMU jumped all over the Mustangs (1-2, 0-1) on the opening drive and never looked back scoring in less than three minutes with a Martinez swing pass to Trevin Edwards who took it down the sidelines 40-yards untouched putting the Buffs up 7-0.
On the next WTAMU possession, Martinez used a play action pass and found C’ing Blanton wide open all alone for a 50-yard pitch and catch as the Buffs were in total control up 14-0 within the first five minutes.
“This isn’t an easy trip,” WTAMU head coach Josh Lynn said. “We were coming off two losses and we challenged the guys to come out and start fast. I was happy how we prepared this week especially in that first quarter. We executed really well. Everyone played well.”
Martinez was on point the entire night having by far his best game in a WTAMU uniform going 19-of-28 for 588 yards with five touchdown passes. His favorite target became Edwards who also had a career effort with seven total catches for 137 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
“It was a fun game,” Edwards said. “We started fast on offense for the third straight game and that’s what we wanted. RJ had a great game and the offensive line had a great game. Everyone did their job and that’s what is suppose to happen.”
The Buffs defense had their best game of the year holding WNM racking up 13 tackles for a loss and getting six sacks on the night. Canyon graduate and WTAMU linebacker Javin Cash led the team with seven tackles. Caprock graduate and Buff safety Jamel Acosta-Lewis added five tackles.
“The defense was amazing,” Lynn said. “We covered well early and got good pressure. We never let them extend plays and played a lot of guys. That always helps.
