Kaison Benton, Randall football, Sr.

On the field: It was quite the season opening debut for quarterback Kaison Benton and the Randall Raiders during a 44-23 road victory against Plainview on Friday night. The Raiders used a big second half to put away the Bulldogs. Benton did his part and then some using his arm and his feet to make him a mismatch for the Plainview defense. In the passing game, the senior leader was extremely efficient picking apart the Bulldog secondary going 18-of-24 for 255 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. In the run game, Benton broke loose rushing for 61 yards on only eight carries scoring an impressive three times for a total of five touchdowns on the night.

Coach Dan Sherwood: With a Week 1 game there is so much unknown going in, but I thought we played good and were able to come away with a huge road win. We started quick then hit a lull and showed a lot of inexperience. Throughout the game that inexperience started growing up and they fought hard to win that game. Kaison did a great job commanding the offense. He has definitely taken major strides from last year. He was great when knowing when to get out of the pocket and was really solid with his arm. What I loved is how he was cheering on the defense throughout the game and rallying the young guys. The team gets behind him and that’s what a leader does.”

Benton: “I think as the game went a long, we just continued to get better and we were able to come away with a big win, especially in Plainview which isn’t an easy place to play. I was a little more comfortable in the offense compared to last year and I couldn’t have done half the things I was able to do without the offensive line. Those guys protected well and played tremendous. It was different without running back Dylan Ray. He did so much for us last year and that had me do more in the run game. We’ll have to see how that continues throughout the season, but I just want to keep being a leader and I want to see this team grow and get better.”
