Tyler Paige didn’t have any issues managing his way through gusty conditions as the Borger graduate ran away with the 56th ASCO ABC7 Tall Tower Open Championship Friday through Sunday at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex.
With the win, Paige, who finished the tournament at eight-under-par scoring a 54-hole score of 208, has now qualified for a spot in the Coors Tournament of Champions in August for a second year in a row and the fourth time in his Amarillo summer golf career.
“The Coors Tournament of Champions is what all of us golfers here in Amarillo play for,” Paige said. “It’s such a fun time and a great tournament to close out the season. It’s the best tournament and why we all love to play these summer tournaments.”
Paige separated himself thanks to a stellar Saturday round of the Tall Tower. Following an even par 72 Friday, Paige embraced the 25-plus gusty winds Saturday to fire a six-under-par 66 that included an eagle on No. 2 to go with four birdies and didn’t card one bogey.
“Saturday was big for me,” Paige said. “I kept the ball in play and I was able to hit a lot fairways. Saturday was a stress free round and the best I’ve hit the ball this year. I was in control of my driver and my irons and separated myself.”
Thanks to his magnificent Saturday, Paige took a five-shot lead into Sunday’s final round and never relinquished his grip. Though he did card a pair of bogeys on the back nine, the rest of the field never made a push at Paige as he was able to keep his distance shooting a final round 70 while even sinking a near 90-foot putt for birdie on the 18th.
“That was a bonus,” Paige said. “That’s a putt you’re just looking to get inside five feet. I hit it solid and somehow it went in.”
Former Wayland Baptist University golfer Ian Ansett finished second with rounds of 75-68-71 for a two-under-par 214.
