Stetson Provence and Drew Baccus trailed most of the afternoon, but it rallied when it counted to win the 33rd Coors Partnership on a windy Sunday at the Arrowhead layout at the Comanche Trail Golf Complex.

The duo shot a low 54-hole total of 28-under par (189) that included a final 18-hole round of 6-under par 66.

This was the fifth Amarillo Summer Major between both Provence and Baccus since June. Provence had won the Budweiser Partnership with Ian Ansett, while Baccus had taken home titles as the Amarillo Country Club Men’s champion and won the Tascosa Golf Club Ambush with partner Kent Neal.

“We have been playing really good golf,” Baccus said. “We had to grind to win this tournament and it will be fun to see what happens in the Coors Tournament of Champions.”

It will now be a quick turnaround for Provence and Baccus, who become competitors starting Thursday morning when the Amarillo golf scene sees its biggest event play out thanks to the 72-hole Coors Tournament of Champions beginning at the Amarillo Country Club.

“We put a lot of pressure on ourselves this weekend. But I think it was undo pressure because we had already qualified for the Coors Tournament of Champions. That’s what we work for every single year. We just relaxed, especially on the back nine. We knew we could win this, and I think Stetson played great on the back.”

Luke Kane and Tate Allred led through 16 holes on Sunday and looked to be on their way to winning the Coors Partnership. However, on No. 17 the momentum flipped toward Provence and Baccus. Reaching the par five No. 17 in just two shots, Baccus was able to knock down an eagle that gave the duo the lead for the first time all afternoon.

“Drew hit a great tee shot on No. 17 and I was able to hit a good iron shot into the green,” Provence said. “That gave Drew an opportunity to knock down an eagle putt and he did that when it counted.”

Baccus echoed Provence’s comment.

“Stetson gave me a great read,” Baccus said. “I didn’t know if it was going to break. It stayed straight and I made it. We were able to put some heat on Luke and Tate. Those guys are so good, and it was a battle every hole.”

Kane did drain a birdie putt, as things were all tied up heading into the 18th and final hole. But on No. 18, Kane and Allred were penalized for a lost ball off the tee shot. All Provence and Baccus had to then is par the 18th, which they did to seal the victory.

Joining Provence and Baccus in the field during this week’s upcoming Coors TOC is defending champion, Ian Ansett, Kyle Kelting, Jenner King, Hunter Corman, Kent Neal and Max Mitchell.
