Childress standout Taylor Wiseman, Bushland sprinters spotlight Class 3A area track and field meet

Though there wasn’t a team champion from the Texas Panhandle, there was plenty of spotlight performances during the District 1-3A/ 2-3A Area track and field meet at Antelopes Stadium in Abernathy on Thursday.

During the boys meet, Bushland’s Slade Perry captivated fans in attendance with his speed qualifying for regionals in three events. Perry blazed his way to the medal stand as a part of the sprint relay team that ran a 42.35. Perry was just getting started from there. Perry sizzled down the track to clock a 10.98 winning the 100-meter dash and followed that later in the afternoon with this third gold medal getting a victory in the 200-meter race with a 22.02.

Bushland teammates Jake Hammer and Ty Purcell are headed to the regionals to join Perry. Purcell won the 300-hurdles thanks to a 39.50 and got a bronze in the 110-meter hurdles (15.60). Hammer hurt the competition as a part of the sprint relay gold medal team with Perry and was third in the 100-meter dash (11.25) to advance.

Canadian finished third as a team with 92 points with Idalou winning the team title (126) and Dalhart coming in second with 99.

The Wildcats saw Joseph Dominguez get to the medal stand twice by winning the long-distance events. Dominguez opened Thursday pacing the field with a time of 10:02.90 to grab the gold. Later in the day, Dominguez was on the podium once again taking the victory in the 1600-meter clocking a 4:32.21. Teammate Camden Cook ran a very good open quarter getting a time of 49.35. That was one of two medals for Cook who was also on the Wildcats mile relay team that placed second (3:27.12.)

Dalhart’s Caden Bird made it to regionals in four events. Bird won the long jump with a 21-5. He was on the sprint relay team that earned bronze (42.76) and was a part of the 800-meter relay team that took silver (1:27.61). Bird also advanced in the 400-meter race with a silver (51.42).

University of Oregon signee and Childress senior Taylor Wiseman took center stage on the girls’ side of things. Wiseman is focused with a quest for state gold as she advanced to the regional meet winning the discus with a toss of 143-9 and jumped on the gold medal stand in the shot put launching a 45-4 1/2.

Other notable performances from Thursday was Bushland’s Kenley King. King advanced to regionals in three events starting with the sprint relay team that won gold with a 49.26. King went on to win the 100-meter dash sprinting to a 12.51 and was on the 800-relay that nabbed silver (1:46.15).

Konnar McClendon keeps on winning races. The phenomenal long distance runner left the field in the dust during the 3200-meter race getting a time of 11:19.44. McClendon did the same in the 1600-meter running a time of 5:18.95 for another gold medal.

Muleshoe’s Vida Morales had the speed to punch a ticket to regional in three events. Morales won the 200-meter event with a 25.89 and took silver in the 100-meter race (12.67) and the 400-meter run (59.12).

Dalhart had a pair of standouts Thursday. Reese Jenkins won the pole vault clearing 11-6 and qualified in the 100-meter dash taking fourth (12.78). Jenkins also punched a ticket to regional as a part of the sprint relay team that got silver (49.62) and the 800-meter relay team that came in third (1:47.64). Kaetlin Sundvahl won four medals highlighted by a gold in the long jump with a mark of 16-11 1/4. Sundvahl medaled in both hurdle events getting silver in the 100-hurdles (15.40) and bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (47.39) and was on the silver medal sprint relay squad.

The Region I-3A Track and Field meet is set for April 18-19 on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
