Panhandle takes team titles
The Panhandle track and field teams made it a clean sweep during the District 2-2A track and field meet on Thursday in Panhandle.
The Panthers edged Wellington 173 to 168 while the Ettes blew away the competition stacking up an eye-popping 228 which was 134 points better than Wellington’s 94 in second place.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]The Ettes got 60 of those points sweeping all three relay events. The sprint relay team started things off behind the team of Ell Robinson, Carly Land, Lexi Durst and Leah Land. That foursome posted a 49.45 for the gold. The 800-meter relay squad of Robinson, Durst, Makennah Austin and Leah Land then won gold with a 1:49.34, and to cap the night off the mile relay team of Robinson, Addison McCoid, Austin and Carly Land ran a 4:12.37 for a gold and a clean sweep.
Carly wasn’t done. She also won the 300-meter hurdle event with a 47.01 and the pole vault by clearing 9-6. Leah also won the 200-meter sprint thanks to a 26.21. Nelly Thiessen helped Panhandle winning the 100-meter dash clocking a 12.87 and won gold in the shot put tossing a 42-8.
On the boys side, Cooper Treadwell of Panhandle won the 400-meter event (52.61) and teammate Dallas Pennington took gold in the 300-meter hurdles (42.62) with Tyler Wood getting the victory in the 110-meter hurdles (15.64).
The Wellington Skyrockets were the story despite not getting the team win. The Skyrockets swept all three relay events showing how dangerous they could be in the coming weeks. The sprint relay foursome of Travon Lewis, Brenden Garcia, Kamron Brooks and Troy Molina, outlasted Panhandle to win with a 45.05. The 800-meter relay team of Travon Lewis, Brooks, Garcia and DeMarcus Lewis won handily with a 1:32.99, and the mile relay team that saw Travon Lewis, Garcia, Brooks DeMarcus Lewis rallied late to beat Panhandle with a 3:28.85.
In the field events, Wellington’s Major Brown won all three jumping competitions. Brown cleared 6-2 for the high jump gold, leaped 40-10 1/2 for the triple jump victory and hit 21-5 1/2 for the long jump title.
The District 1-2A/ 2-2A Area track and field meet is set for Wednesday in Panhandle.
District 1-2A
Gruver gets district championships, Stratford’s Braden sets new record
Both the Gruver Hounds and Lady Hounds won the team titles during the District 1-2A meet that actually resonated from both Gruver and Stratford due to rainy conditions on Thursday.
While Gruver took the team spotlight, individually it was Stratford’s Bryce Braden highlighting the meet with some serious distance on and off the field. Braden started his morning in Gruver, however, rainy weather moved the field events to Stratford. Braden had to head back to his hometown and throw which didn’t phase him one bit. All Braden did was uncork a new school record with a toss of 192-6 in the discus to smash his previous record of 180-1. Following that historic feat, Braden, an Air Force commit, went on to dominate in the shot put winning his second gold tossing out a 51-10.
Also making a name for himself in the field events was West Texas High’s Rylee Buck. Buck hit the board popping off a great leap to take gold with a 43-4.
Gruver’s Mason Lankford did all he could to get the Greyhounds a team title. The sensational freshman swept the hurdle races winning the 110-meter with a time of 15.82 and ran a 40.96 to get gold in the 300-meter hurdles. Lankford was also on the mile relay winning team that clocked a 3:36.47.
Sunray’s Kolten Simmons sizzled in the sprints. Simmons won the 100-meter dash blazing a 11.1. Simmons made it a double gold medal day by following with a win in the 200-meter race thanks to a 23.06.
The girls side saw a plethora of worthy performances.
Gruver’s Halle McLain won both the 3200-meter run (12:58.27) and the 1600-meter race (6:00.94) as well as the pole vault event (9-6). West Texas High’s Emorie McNabb was her normal self. McNabb used her speed to win the 100-meter dash clocking a 12.78 and the 400-meter race with a 1:01.43. She got on the silver medal stand in the 200-meter running a 28.10.
The Sunray relay teams were outstanding. The Lady Bobcats won all three relay events starting with the foursome of Adamariz Mendoza, Lexi Gomez, Taylor Andujo and Isabella De La Rosa winning the sprint relay (51.58). The team of Mendoza, Gomez, Andujo and Callie Morgan earned gold in the 800-meter relay with a 1:50.83 and the mile relay unit of De La Rosa, Gomez, Mendoza and Adrienne Vargas won running a 4:14.47.
The District 1-2A/ 2-2A Area track and field meet is set for Wednesday in Panhandle.
District 3-2A
Farwell claims team crowns
It wasn’t easy but the Farwell Steers and Lady Blue got the District 3-2A team championships Thursday in Sudan.
The Steers totaled 173 points to hold off Sudan with 169 points. The Lady Blue didn’t have as much trouble scoring 193 points to beat second-place Lockney which had 126.
Makylee Baldwin, Isabella Jaime and Lexi Wade put on a show for Farwell. Baldwin won the 200-meter dash sprinting to a 26.50, she earned her second gold as part of the mile relay (4:11.62), and won the high jump clearing 5-feet. Jaime clocked a 1:00.58 to get to the gold medal stand in the 400-meter race. Jaime then won the 800-meter run with a 2:20.09 and was a part of the mile relay’s 4:11.62. Wade dominated the long distance getting the victory in the 1600-meter run (5:32.32) and the 3200-meter run pacing the field with a 12:05.13 and was on the mile relay team that won.
On the boys side, Farwell’s Ryder McElroy tossed a 146-10 for a win in the discus. He was silver on the mile relay team (3:39.03) and earned bronze in the 200-meter (23.84). Teammate Joel Juarez won the 800-meter race (2:08.65) and was a part of the silver medal mile relay (3:39.03). Bovina’s Jose Carranza had a strong meet winning in the 200-meter race (23.29) and the 400-meter (52.06).
The District 3-2A/ 4-2A Area track and field meet is set for April 10 at Abernathy High School.
