Fighting through rain and cold temperatures, athletes from the Texas Panhandle had quite the performances during the District 1-3A track and field meet at Randall High School on Friday and Saturday.
The Canadian Wildcats and Dalhart Lady Wolves were the two teams coming away victorious with team titles as the Wildcats scored 165 points for the win and the Lady Wolves tallied 179 points for the title.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]CJ Jiminez was a spark for Canadian throughout the afternoon. Jiminez won a gold medal pacing the field in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:05.27 for his first gold. He was also a part of the mile relay team that won with a time of 3:35.79. Teammate Camden Cook followed Jiminez with a win in the 400-meter race sprinting to a 50.27. Cook, with Jimenez was a part of the mile relay team that was on the gold medal stand.
Bushland had three standouts during the district meet. Football standout Ty Purcell showed what he could do on the track racking up three gold medals. Purcell swept the hurdle events winning the 110 race with a time of 15.67 and the 300-event clocking a 40.52. Purcell was on the sprint relay squad that found the gold medal stand in a time of 43.05. Teammate Slade Perry blazed to a time of 11.16 to win the 100-meter dash and then followed that with a 22.66 for another gold in the 200-meter event and Jaxon Lawler was strong in the field competition claiming gold in the shot put tossing a 50-1 1/4 and the discus launching a 153-7.
Dalhart’s Kaetlin Sundvahl has been under the radar all season but that won’t last long if she continues how she did at the district meet. Sundvahl had a great day winning both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle events. Sundvahl claimed gold in the 100 hurdles running a smooth 16.13. A little later, Sundvahl made it a clean sweep with a time of 48.30 to get gold in the 300. On top of those two races, Sundvahl was also part of the Lady Wolves gold medal sprint relay team clocking a 49.29.
Canadian’s Konnar McClendon and Arionna Black helped the Lady Cats to a second-place finish. Black stacked the day with three gold medals by nabbing a win in the 800-meter race (2:21.96), the 400-meter race (1:01.35) and on the mile relay team that held a time of 4:17.64. McClendon, as expected, made her splash in the long-distance events pacing the field in the 3200-meter for gold with a 11:38.22 and the 1600-meter race (5:29.09).
Bushland’s Kenley King showed off her speed making three trips to the medal stand. King outlasted the field to win the 100-meter dash with a 12.77. She was then part of the 800-meter relay gold medal team (1:48.25) and earned silver in the sprint relay (50.47).
Fans in attendance got to take a look at University of Oregon signee and Childress senior Taylor Wiseman. Wiseman’s quest to state started Wednesday winning gold in both the shot put and discus. Wiseman powered out a gold medal throw of 151-2 to win the discus. Wiseman then showed her amazing strength launching a 45-2 1/2 to win the shot put for a double gold medal day.
District 2-3A
The Idalou boys and Shallowater girls track and field teams dominated the District 2-3A track and field meet at Lubbock-Cooper on Friday.
The Wildcats had a total of 200 points for the district title while the Fillies finished with 211.
Dimmitt’s Lily Rodriguez won two golds sprinting to a 12.74 in the 100-meter dash and a 26.02 in the 200-meter run. She also qualified for area on the mile relay team. Friona’s Kitzy Welch won the discus event throwing a gold medal launch of 131-0. Welch also got a bronze in the 100-meter hurdles (16.69). Welch’s teammate Angelica Reyes won the shot put with a toss of 38-11 1/2 and Muleshoe’s Mauricio Herrera was the 400-meter champion (52.50).
The District 1-3A/ 2-3A area track and field meet is set for Thursday at Abernathy High School.
