The high school track and field season is off and running with the Canyon Invitational being a major showcase on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Over 1,500 competitors and 25 teams took part in one of the bigger track meets in the Amarillo-area or South Plains each year.
There were many standout performances with Amarillo High making it a clean sweep in the big school division winning the team titles. The Lady Sandies won the team championship with 144 points beating rival Tascosa which finished with 114. On the boys’ side, AHS racked up 154.5 points to defeat second-place Canyon’s 115.5.
In the small school division, the Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Lady Patriots (111 points) edged West Plains by 10 points while Dumas won boys small school title with 128.5.
There were many standout performances Friday and Saturday.
Tascosa’s Saphina Stanley had a banner afternoon. The Lady Rebel totaled three gold medals setting a new meet record with a leap of 19-8 3/4 in the long jump. Stanley also took gold in the 400-meter race clocking a 56.57 and won gold in the triple jump (37-6 1/2).
In girls’ action, Canyon sensation Addison Bristow posted an impressive of 2:08.8 to win the 800-meter gold medal. Bristow’s time is the second fastest in the nation. Bristow went on to win the 1600-meter race clocking a 4:54.7 and helped the Lady Eagles silver medal time of 4:01.80.
Amarillo High’s Willow Cornell dominated over the weekend. Cornell took home gold in the 100-meter hurdle event with a 15.56 and was the opening leg on a gold medal mile relay team that finished with a 3:59.28. Cornell also was a part of the Lady Sandies gold medal winning 3200-meter relay team that ran a 1:43.21.
Childress standout and University of Oregon signee Taylor Wiseman highlighted the field events. Wiseman took home a pair of gold medals tossing a 45-6 in the shot put and a 143-6 in the discus.
The Land sisters from Panhandle took home some new hardware. Senior Leah and sophomore Carly each finished with two gold medals. Leah and Carly were part of the winning sprint relay team with a 49.21. Leah then won the 200-meter sprint thanks to a 25.64 and Carly won the 300-meter hurdles race pacing the field with a 45.41.
The boys also saw some great performances.
Dumas was dominant in the relays winning both the 800-meter relay and the mile relay. The Demons clocked a time of 1:28.97 then a gold medal time of 3:22.5 in the mile relay. Reese Wadell was a part of the gold medal relay and also medaled with a gold in the 300-meter hurdles (39.82) and nabbed silver in the 110-hurdles (42.16).
Randall showed its speed over the weekend. The sprint relay ran a time of 42.16 for a gold medal. Kaiden Miller sprinted to a time of 11.04 to win the 100-meter dash and Collin Miller leaped to a 22-9 in the long jump for a victory in the small school division.
A couple of other highlights were Amarillo High’s Josh Hierholzer who popped off a 23-6 in the big school long jump for a gold. Canyon thrower Kelton Burgoon launched a 172-7 to claim the discus title and West Plains leaper Brycen Williams cleared 6-6 to get a gold in the high jump.
