Tascosa runs over El Paso Americas
A slow start mattered little to the Tascosa Rebels on Thursday night due to the way they finished.
Tascosa fell behind El Paso Americas early, but the Rebels found a gear in the second quarter. They scored 23 straight points to finish the game and rolled to a 30-9 victory at the Socorro Student Activity Complex.
Americas took a 9-7 lead over Tascosa (6-5), but after that, the Rebels turned it on offensively. As was the case in the season finale against Amarillo High a week earlier, quarterback Coltyn Fulton was at the controls.
Fulton again led the Rebels in rushing, with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Tascosa’s patented flexbone rushing game was in postseason form with 384 yards.
Americas finished the season 3-7.
The Rebels will now face undefeated Saginaw (11-0) in the area round at 6 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
Amarillo High routs previously unbeaten El Dorado
An imperfect ending to the regular season didn’t keep the Amarillo High Sandies from spoiling an entire perfect season by El Paso El Dorado on Friday night.
Entering the postseason one game above .500, the Sandies proved that records mean nothing once the playoffs start. Amarillo High’s offense stayed in high gear in rolling over previously unbeaten El Paso El Dorado 45-14 in El Paso to keep the season going.
The Sandies (6-4) will play Richland (9-2) in the area round set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
Quarterback Jett Lopez continued to come up big for Amarillo High. He completed 12-of-18 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score. His favorite target was Oliver Parsons, who had four catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Jude Dunavin was a dual threat at running back for the Sandies. He ran for 164 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and had three catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Class 4A Division I
West Plains routs Clint
For the second straight year, West Plains opened the playoffs against Clint, and for the second straight year, the results were rewarding.
The Wolves dominated to such an extent that their starters were able to take the second half off as they rolled to a 42-8 victory in Artesia, N.M. on Thursday to advance to the area round for the third straight season in just their third year of existence.
West Plains advances to square off with Brownwood (6-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in Snyder.
The Wolves (8-3) did the bulk of their damage early on the ground against Clint (4-7). Sophomore Slade Russell ran for 162 yards and four touchdowns on only 10 carries.
West Plains took a 35-0 halftime lead and was done scoring for the evening before Clint finally scored in the fourth quarter.
The Wolves threw only 11 passes but completed all of them, as starter Reid Macon left the game after going 4-for-4 for 105 yards. Backup Alex Lucero was 7-for-7 for 63 yards.
Unstoppable Randall offense steamrolls Ysleta
The new season did nothing to slow down Randall’s offense against Ysleta to open the playoffs.
Randall seemed able to score at will, be it through the air or on the ground, as the Raiders rolled to a 71-27 victory at Hobbs, N.M. to give them their 10th win of the season.
They’ll move on to the area round against Andrews on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Frenship.
The Raiders (10-1) were pretty much able to do whatever they wanted to offensively against Ysleta (8-3) in jumping out to a 29-0 lead. Kaison Benton completed 10-of-15 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Kaiden Miller had only three catches, but they all went for touchdowns totaling 134 yards.
Dylan Ray led the running game by rushing for 181 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries and started the scoring with an 85-yard run. Sophomore Daniel Nunez led the defense with nine tackles, including one for a loss, one sack and a fumble recovery.
Dumas dominates Austin
Records also didn’t mean much when Dumas faced El Paso Austin at Denver City on Friday, as Dumas took the lead in the second quarter and didn’t look back in rolling to a 56-21 victory.
Dumas (5-6) will face Lampasas (9-2) in the area round with the game set for 6 p.m. Friday at the Mustang Bowl in Andrews.
Austin finished the season 9-2.
The Demons led 21-14 in the second quarter but scored 35 straight points to remove all doubt after that. James Coaly was the major weapon for Dumas in that span, as he had five catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns.
Dumas quarterback Colton Mills completed 10-of-12 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns.
Hereford holds off Riverside
Brylyn Lopez carried the Hereford Whitefaces onto the next round of the playoffs against El Paso Riverside, scoring all four touchdowns for the Herd in a 28-20 victory at Odessa’s Ratliff Stadium.
Hereford (8-3) will face Stephenville (10-1) in the area round at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
After Riverside (9-2) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Lopez took over from there. He returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and scored on runs of 1 and 25 yards to give the Herd a 21-7 lead.
Neither team scored in the second or third quarters, and after Riverside cut it to 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Lopez scored on a 1-yard run which proved to be the difference. It capped a night in which he ran for 209 yards on 32 carries
Division II
Perryton falls in OT to Monahans
Perryton suffered a heartbreaker against Monahans, as a two-point conversion in overtime fell short and the Rangers saw their season end with a 28-27 loss at Lubbock-Cooper.
The Rangers finished the season 4-7.
Quarterback Cooper Schilling carried Perryton as usual offensively. He threw two touchdowns and ran for another, and in the overtime, he scored on a 3-yard run to cut the lead to a point.
Perryton opted to go for two and the win, but the pass fell incomplete and Monahans (6-5) held on for the win.
In another game involving a District 2-4A Division II school, Borger’s season ended with a 50-17 loss to Midland Greenwood at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty. The Bulldogs finished the year 3-8 while Greenwood moved to 10-1.
