Bushland falls short to Shallowater in district showdown
In another big-time district matchup, Shallowater was able to fend off a late rally from Bushland in a very slow-paced game during a District 2-3A Division I opener at Todd Field in Shallowater on Friday night.
The Mustangs (6-2 overall) are atop the league standings at 1-0. Bushland suffers its first loss on the year falling to 7-1 overall and 0-1 in district.
In a game that saw close to 30 penalties between the two teams, Bushland trailed 21-14 in the early stages of the fourth quarter. That’s when Bushland’s Jaxon Fetsch scored on a five-yard touchdown cutting the Mustangs deficit at 21-20. However, the extra-point was blocked.
The Falcons had one final drive, but the comeback came up short. Fetsch was strong defensively with 11 tackles, four of those for a loss.
Quarterback Quaid Ferris went 22-of-40 for 217 yards but did have two interceptions. Slade Perry led Bushland with seven catches for 95 yards.
Shallowater quarterback Cooper Martin ran for 128 yards with a touchdown and threw for 96 yards with another score.
Dalhart rallies past River Road
The Dalhart Golden Wolves erased an early 13-point deficit to knock off River Road in a District 1-3A Division I opener, 35-19, at Golden Wolves Stadium on Friday night.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter advantage highlighted by a Malaki Miller 54-yard touchdown scamper.
Dalhart settled in and started to take control scoring 35 unanswered to put the game away.
Hunter Trusler and Talon Garcia got the comeback started with touchdown runs in the first half that put the Golden Wolves up 14-13 at the break.
In the second half, Angel Avalos helped Dalhart pull away thanks to a 53-yard touchdown run.
Trusler threw for 76 yards with a touchdown and ran for 57 yards with two more scores. On top of Avalos’ touchdown run, he also had 36 yards receiving.
Despite the loss, River Road quarterback Alex Warren toted the rock 17 times for 116 yards rushing and threw a touchdown pass. Miller added 107 yards on the ground with a touchdown.
Dalhart pushes its record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in District 1-3A Division I. River Road drops to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in district.
District 1-3A Division II
Canadian KO’s Tulia
Canadian has started District 1-3A Division II play the right way getting a second straight lopsided win taking down Tulia in a very convincing way 50-3 on Friday night on Chris Koetting Field at Wildcats Stadium.
Like last week against Friona, the Wildcats opened the game fast building a 36-0 first quarter lead on the way to a 50-0 advantage by halftime.
The Wildcats did all of their damage in the first half with 334 of the 350 total yards coming in the opening two quarters.
Canadian platooned senior quarterback Clay Kendall and freshman Weston Mitchell at quarterback. Kendall was solid going 8-of-11 for 123 yards with two touchdowns while Mitchell continues to improve going 5-of-7 for 66 yards with TD.
Slayden Dickinson ran for 58 yards on only four carries with a touchdown and snagged a 62-yard score. Julian Dominguez caught five passes for 52 yards with a touchdown. Riggs Pennington added 44 yards receiving and a TD.
Canadian (5-3 overall) is now 2-0 in district. Tulia (3-6) falls to 1-2 in the league.
Childress blanks Dimmitt
Childress is headed to the Class 3A postseason by staying perfect in District 1-3A Division II thanks to a 69-0 shutout of Dimmitt in Dimmitt on Friday night.
The Bobcats are hot winning three straight to open district moving to 3-0 in league action and punching a ticket into the playoffs. Dimmitt (2-6) drops to 0-2 in district.
The Childress offense posted 589 total yards chewing up Dimmitt’s defense with 430 of those coming from the ground game.
Lucian Davis led the way carrying the ball 15 times for 167 yards with three touchdowns. Kobe Sims was a solid compliment with four carries for 111 yards and a pair of TDs. Quarterback Koen Galligan went 8-of-12 through the air for 90 yards with three touchdowns.
The Childress defense limited Dimmitt to 109 total yards. Kade Jenkins had seven tackles for Childress and Owen Dill nabbed an interception.
District quick hits
- Slaton defended its home turf taking down Muleshoe by a shocking 48-6 victory. Muleshoe senior quarterback Nathan Martens exited the contest with an undisclosed injury. The Mules (6-3) are now 2-1 in district. The Tigers (6-2) improves to 1-1.
- Idalou stayed hot by handling Littlefield 58-22. The Wildcats (6-2) remain in control of the district lead at 2-0. Littlefield (5-4) falls to 1-2 in 2-3A Division II.
