In quite the surprise, the Perryton Rangers were able to pull away from the defending UIL Class 4A state champion Canyon Eagles to win the District 4-4A cross country meet on a blustery Friday morning at Canyon High School.
The Rangers tallied 42 points to win the district crown with the Eagles following with 55 points. West Plains also punched a ticket to regionals by taking third with 63 points.

A complete team effort Perryton to pull off this district title. Junior Jacob Erickson was the individual champion, however, it was the combination of Ethan Ruelas, Adrey Ramirez, Alex Grajeda and Ethan Bond that stepped up. That Ranger foursome placed eighth through 12 drawing Perryton major points to help get the victory. Ruelas was eighth overall (16:22.7), Ramirez was 10th (16.42.7), Grajeda took 11th (16.49.6) and Bond came in 12th (16:54.7).
“This was a total team effort,” Perryton cross country coach Staci Erickson said. “We talk about it all the time that it always comes down to the third, fourth and fifth runners and even the sixth and seventh runners play a part. Everyone on a cross country team is crucial and everyone on this team has a role. They all played a part in this race to make a district title happen.

Then there is Jacob Erickson. This group doesn’t get it done without the highly decorated long distance runner. After finishing third at the district meet last year, then coming off an amazing state track and field meet where he earned two silver medals in the 800-meter and 1600-meter race, Erickson picked back up where he left off by running a time of 15:07.1 to win by 12 seconds of West Plains runner Noah Holland (15:19.3).
“It was great to see what Jacob did,” said Staci Erickson, the mother of Jacob. “He has matured as a runner and he’s been very strategic. It’s hard to separate the coach and mom part of it. I was in the junior high when Jacob was going into high school. The school asked me to be the head cross country coach and I didn’t want to do it at first. Jacob was getting so quick and when I took the high school job I had to figure out how to keep up with him. I think doing all that helped me be able to coach the team. As a mom, it’s really cool to see what he did, but as a coach I never get to see the end of his race because I’m coaching other kids.”
In girls’ action, while Canyon won the team title, Randall and West Plains also advanced. Randall had three runners place in the top 10 led by Rebel Rea. Rea placed fourth with a time of 11:37.4, followed by Maren LeFever in fifth (11:40.8) and Brooke French taking seventh (11:47.4). Charleigh Jackson of West Plains tallied an eighth place finish (11:48.8) to lead the Lady Wolves.
