Randall gets past Dumas to stay unbeaten
The Randall Raiders maintained perfection when they needed it most to open district at Dumas.
Randall overcame a small deficit early in the third quarter by closing the game with 13 unanswered points to beat Dumas 27-17 and stay undefeated.
It was a competitive game throughout, as for three quarters each team answered the other. Dumas took a 3-0 lead, but the Raiders (6-0, 1-0) took a 14-3 lead in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Kaison Benton and Dylan Ray.
In the third quarter Dumas (2-4, 0-1) took a 17-14 lead on a six-yard scoring pass from Colton Mills to ZJ Jara. However, the Raiders tied it on a 33-yard field goal by Jacob Avalos before the end of the quarter and took the lead for good in the fourth quarter on Ray’s 80-yard scoring run.
Ray ran for 148 yards on 21 carries. Mills completed 17-of-23 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
Hereford rallies past Pampa
Hereford’s prolific offense was able to get things going in the second half by taking control with 21 unanswered points to pull away from Pampa 35-14 on Friday night at Whiteface Stadium.
As expected, Hereford (5-1, 1-0) had a big night throwing the ball, but with some unexpected results. Quarterback Kalub Ramirez and wideout Ethan Gonzales hooked up three times in the air for scores, but one of them wasn’t the conventional combination.
Ramirez completed 15-of-21 passes for 232 yards and two scores to Gonzales, who had seven catches for 167 yards. Gonzales also threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Ramirez.
Brylyn Lopez ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the Herd. Pampa fell to 2-4 and 0-1.
District 2-4A Division II
Perryton loses shootout at Liberty
Perryton showed the offensive form which has often been a highlight this season, but the Rangers couldn’t keep up defensively, as they lost their district opener at new school Lubbock-Cooper Liberty 43-40.
The Rangers (2-4, 0-1) rolled up 501 yards of total offense in the losing effort. Quarterback Cooper Schilling continued to produce, completing 22-of-32 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns while running for 197, but it wasn’t enough.
Liberty quarterback Colton Bichard was 14-of-24 for 284 yards with four touchdown tosses.
Liberty is now 2-5 and 1-0.
District 2-5A Division II
Palo Duro crushed by Wylie
The promising pre-district start by Palo Duro looks to have been washed away after the first two games of district play.
For the second straight game to start district, the Dons had their defense get rolled, as Abilene Wylie jumped on top early and didn’t let up in rolling to a 70-28 victory in Abilene which left the Dons still winless in district.
Palo Duro (3-3, 0-2) had a respectable game offensively, and actually outgained Wylie (5-1, 3-0) by a 468-452 margin. However, some of that came long after the game was decided, as the Dons scored two late touchdowns to make the rout look a little less unsightly.
Sophomore Julian Reese threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns for the Dons, but also threw six interceptions, including a pick six. Kyron Brown had six catches for 156 yards and a touchdown.
District 2-5A Division I
Amarillo High destroys Caprock
The Amarillo High Sandies made sure people knew they were in the thick of the district race at Dick Bivins Stadium on Friday night.
Crosstown rival Caprock felt the brunt of everything the Sandies did on both sides of the ball, as Amarillo High was dominant from start to finish, routing the Longhorns 56-3 to move over .500 in district play.
Quarterback Jett Lopez had a big game for the Sandies (3-3, 2-1), completing 16-of-23 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those scores went to Bryson Brown, who had five catches for 84 yards and Tate Blackwell caught two touchdowns as well.
Jude Dunavin was a great complement to Lopez and the passing game for Amarillo High, as he ran for 149 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. For good measure, he also threw a scoring pass.
Caprock (1-5, 0-2) stayed winless in district and continued to struggle offensively.
